upon the advice of people from this site I bought a new drive to replace my old one, I used macrium reflect to restore an image. On the first boot, I could hear the hd working and I am wondering if this is normal or if my gut feeling is correct and I now have to figure out how to wipe this drive before returning it. I hear light crackles when the HD is active, something I only hear when working with older computers.

The drive is "Seagate (ST500LM000) 500GB 5400RPM 64MB Cache 2.5" Solid State Hybrid Drive".

Also, coming from another 5400rpm drive, that first boot was slower the what I would get on my old (silent) harddrive. I understand that it takes a couple launchs for the drive to learn but I was hoping it could at least match my old drive on that level, but maybe this is the case because it is a lemon?

Solution
Its always possible you have received a defective unit, and a clicking/crackling sound from a HDD is never a good sign. Would see if you can get an RMA on the drive.

I just noticed it is also running hot. Atleast hotter then my old drive. Does that mean anything?
