Dual Gigabyte 7870s or single 7950???

Im trying to decide if I should buy another Gigabyte 7870 OC for crossfire or if I should get a single 7950??? Playing mainly games like BF3 Borderlands 2 and Tomb Raider at the moment but getting geared up for BF4 and Watchdogs... Could sell the 7870 and use it towards the 7950 which is a great help money wise or just spend 250 for another 7870???

My vote is go with 7950. Because later down the line you can just add another 7950 when they are cheaper. And that will just blow the 7870's out of the water any how. So i think overall that would be a more solid investment. Abit of a hassle to have to sell your card though. You can also pull off a nice Crossfire on the 7870 nothing wrong with that. But performance wise i am leaning towards Dual 7950's in the long run. Start with one end up with multiple.

Of the two options, getting another 7870 would net you the most performance increase. Though if your playing at 1080p, there's not much reason to get dual cards.
Also take into account Crossfire's framerating issues, I suggest looking it up before you go down this route.

My suggestion, sit on your 7870 until you can afford a 7970, upgrading to a 7950 isn't really enough of an upgrade to justify spending the cash. Or look into getting something like 780 which will be a massive performance upgrade.

If your power supply is adequate, I'd crossfire your 7870. Your situation is the perfect implementation of crossfire whereby you already own a decent card can are able to presumably save money by having delayed the purchase of the second. It's also easier to buy something than it is to sell something. AMD forever!

the 7870 crossfire setup will destroy 7950 and at 1080p will actually out perform an Nvidia gtx680. u didnt say if it was a 2gb or 1gb card but if its only 1gb u might want to wait and get a card with bigger frame buffer(2gb is sweet spot for gaming right now) as some games, ie\ BF3 need 2gb card for ULTRA settings.

Any particular reason behind this? Bad experience in the past? Pricing?



The 780 would not only be an increase in performance, but its a much newer card and will last longer in the long run.

1 HD 7870 isn't doing it for you? I ran a single HD 7850 for a while and was able to max out everything except ARMA II... but that's ARMA. I bought a second 7850 to run in CF. IMO if you have the money, go for the single card. Crossfire is temperamental and a headache. I wish I just sold my card and started over with more powerful one.

I do not understand the pricing of Nvidia.. I have had them and they are great cards dont get me wrong.. But im a whole " get more for less " kinda guy.. And when specs are compared to each other I lean towards AMD... Nvidia and Intel are way over priced imho..... Not here to start a AMD vs Nvidia war and not wanting to compare... I know the differences between the sets and in the end im a AMD fan.. I think that in the end I would be more happy going the 7950 route or even a 7970 and still save money over a 680..

GTX 760 for instance is one of the best cards if you are looking for $ per horsepower. On the other hand, specs dont eman anything unless you look at the benchmarks and actual data taken from test enviroments. I found the GTX 670/680/770/780 to be far more preferential than AMD counterparts in this current generation of cards.
