I am going to make a new system and will use an 1 TB HDD.

What will be the ideal and effective Partitioning of the disk of size 1 TB ?
I mean,

1) How many Partition (3/4/5/6/?)

2) Distribution of the size of those partitions according to the suggestion given for the query made above (1) ?

Note : I will use Dual booting ... (i) Win-7 Ultimate SP-1 & (ii) Win-XP-SP-2.

(if possible) three (3) dedicated/ separate partition will be nice for storing (i) Movies (ii) Music/ MP3's (iii) Data/ S?w installation executable files backup.

Don't want to keep any imp. file/ data in the partition containing the two OS.

Is it a good practice to leave the first partition (C:\) small and reasonably free with installation of the OS(s) in the next two (i.e. D:\ & E:\) ?

Please do suggest and share your opinion on these :wahoo:

Correct, but make sure you allocate enough space on C: to cover the installation and future window updates; some programs install to C: by default, again, another reason to make the drive space a little bigger. I used about 100GB.

You do loose some space when doing multiple partitions, but not enough to notice on a 1TB drive.

When installing the OS, it brings up the drive and i created the partitions at that time. In the past, i have installed the OS using the entire drive as C:, then using Partition Magic to create the additional partitions.

Happy partitioning!!

Previous to purchasing my SSD, i had my HDD configured the same way you are proposing. Make sure you allow enough space on your C: for both OSs, then go nutz on partitioning the remaining space. This is how my was set up..

C: (OS) 150GB, D: (Games) 250GB, E: (Documents) 100GB, F: (Pictures) 100 GB, G: (Apps) 250GB, H: (Music/Movies) 250GB

Tweak to your liking.

Thanks for the reply :)

what about the last one ?
i.e.
Is it a good practice to leave the first partition (C:\) small and reasonably free with installation of the OS(s) in the next two (i.e. D:\ & E:\) ?

Also, heard that more partition means more faster access but more spaces lost (due to the partition allocation) ... is it true ? Then for 1 TB, I guess, more than 6 partition will not be suitable.

and did you use any specific partitioning tool(s) ?
