Splendid
Because it constantly runs in the background scanning and checking network traffic and local files, which is very taxing on machines. I personally use no anti virus what so ever and have not had issues ever. For people that do get virus's most times they should reformat anyway s to keep the os integretity up. Even when anti virus programs get rid of or quarantine files it can cause inconsistancy's in the os and the registry

The only thing I could suggest is to run Windows Task manager while running Avast and see how it's effecting your RAM / CPU usage.

I use AVG and it definitely has an impact on my CPU in particular but it doesn't cause issues it just shows it being heavily used but not while it's idle only when virus scanning.

Are you running Avast while gaming or is it idle? if its idle and not doing a virus scan and causing problems then that's definitely an issue.

Have a look at Win task manager whilst gaming with and without Avast disabled and see what it's showing.

Imo no it shouldn't do especially if running a 4gig FX CPU and 8GB RAM unless your doing a system scan whilst playing.

Running in the background no it shouldn't, check Win task or change to another Anti Virus.

Like the previous poster said Avast will probably be the most active background program if you check Win Task Manager, I know AVG is on mine.

The difference is mine causes me zero issues I have no idea why yours would, personally I'd consider trying another Anti Virus and see if the issue improves if your sure that's all it is.

Also please check Win Task and have a look if there is anything else which is also causing high background usage.

It happened to me about a year ago, I uninstalled Avast and got AVG. It's lighter but I disabled it as well and only use it when I know I'm in risk.
It also pissed me off that every time I turned on my PC that girl started talking

They are consistently ranked no1 & no2 amongst free Anti Virus year on year swapping rankings regularly but always maintaining from the rankings I've seen the number one and two spot.

AVG is brilliant for me, I used to use Avast on a laptop but it slowed my internet so I stopped using it.

For free Anti virus the rankings I've seen have always had AVG or Avast as top ranked choices.

Depends on who's ranking your looking at but they are always mentioned in the favorites.

They've claimed to have made it very lightweight so it runs minimal (for an anti virus) usage in the background.

Traditionally AVG and Avast have always been reliable but bitedefender may be better for you if background operations are an issue, I've never used it but I wouldn't get too hung up on which one they all do practically the same thing and the ranks change year on year pretty much.

Just go with one with a good reputation, I use AVG so I can vouch for it.

Thanks, I had never heard of bitdefender but I downloaded it today and was very pleased. BF3 running with the anti-virus and a few more stuff in the background and was working perfectly. Also it's not annoying like avast
