Free Win8 with Win7 PCs?

I was pricing some Thinkpad laptops online and asked the retailer for verification that it did indeed come with Win7 and not Win8. The reply I got back was kind of surprising. I had never heard of such a thing. I wonder if anyone here can vouch for the Sales Mangager's statement?

The Reply I got:
----------------

This model comes with Windows 7 Pro 64-bit preinstalled and it\'s licensed for Windows 8 Pro. I will explain:

Since the introduction of Windows 8 on October 26, 2012, most computers these days are shipped this way:

-Windows 8 sticker
-Windows 8 Recovery Disks
-Windows 7 preloaded by a manufacturer through Microsoft Downgrade Rights Program
-Windows 8 Product key is now encrypted into BIOS (this is Microsoft\'s innovation)
-Windows 7 feeds off Windows 8 license through Microsoft Downgrade Rights Program, there is no a separate license for Windows 7 anymore.

You are licensed for Windows 7 through Windows 8 license (Downgrade Rights Program). You can use it as long as you want. When you are ready to move to Windows 8, you don\'t need to purchase anything. You are already licensed and have disks to do so.

You can contact Microsoft and Lenovo to verify this.

Really? So your saying the reply was legit. Interesting. I've always avoided Win8 after my experience with it on my desktop and on a Surface Pro. So I guess I am a bit behind the curve. And I didn't think M$ would allow such a thing. Thanks.

Pleasure. MS will do ANYTHING for a little bit of marketing and an excuse to move to a new OS. They still make cash out of the OEMs for that lisence. Just hidden costs.
