New build: i5 750 --> 3770 or 4770 or wait for 5770? (Video machine w/ light gaming)

I have a four-year-old i5 750 @ 2.67 on an Asus P7-P55D LE with 8gb of Corsair DDR3 1600 ram, with an ATI 6890 running Win8 x64.

For half a year I was thinking of getting a 3770 (no K, since I don't overclock), but waited for the 4770 to come out, and now I am wondering why!

Now I'm unsure if I should just plop a 3770 into my current system (if I even can) or get a 4770 (and new mobo, and new RAM(?)... bye money)...

I use Windows Movie Maker, Handbrake, and Photoshop CS5. Which all take advantage of multithreading... and editing 1080p video on my i5 750 can get janky. (I also play L4D2 and HL3 whenever THAT will come out...)

So, 3770 or 4770+mobo? Or just wait because neither is a huge improvement over what I got now?

Thanks! :)

(Or maybe get a Mac Pro when they update, and dual boot? Except I haaaate using OSX.)

Solution
You can not put a 3770 or even a 2700 into you motherboard so either way its a new motherboard. If your ram is 8gbs ddr3 your ram will be fine in a new ivy bridge or haswell system. I would say though go with the 3770 and call it a day as its prices will drop and it only requires a h77 motherboard which is way cheaper now

A mac book pro is 800$ of hardware for 1600$ its not a worth it. The only reason to use mac is if your building your own machine and installing there operating system on a self built system. Buying macontosh products is always a waste of money.

There's other reasons to buy a Mac than that, but yeah they are huge wastes of money. I paid a fraction of what my brother's girlfriend paid for her Macbook for my Lenovo Y500 and it does everything I need it to.

But a Mac Pro is $5,000 for an LGA 1366 configuration with a 5 year old GPU, not a good value if you ask me.

OP - you don't really need to upgrade from LGA 1156, you won't notice much benefit there. Buy a new GPU and you're set.

AAH arigatooo~! I hoped I might be able to squeak by with just the 3770 but if it also needs a new mobo (and neither choice needing new ram, yay!), I feel like I can now focus my search much better! (And weigh just two options -- the cheaper 3770 or pricier 4770).

Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Big help :)

I know, right?

(I was thinking i'd mostly use Win8, but go over to the Mac side for video editing and nuthin else.)

But like Fire said, it's just a gargantuan excess o' money.

AARGH I thought it'd be like... twice as fast with video (8 cores instead of 4 and all that!)

Nope. The difference between a 4 core CPU and an 8 core CPU is that an 8 core can do more tasks at the same time than a 4 core can.

Only 8 cores youll actually see are Xeon's Amd's "octacores" are really onl 4 module making each logical core only a half module. It takes 2 cores to equal the power of an actualy core. its like amd's equavilant to hyper threading like intell. The differance between the 4770 and 3770 is basically nothing at all its not worth spending the money on haswell. Id say go with the 3770 and a cheap H77 motherboard and call it a day.

but now g-unit says the diff btw i5 750 and i7 3770 isnt worth the cost/effort? I thought the i7's were way better for video editing stuff... (this /my confusion is why the mac pro became an option for a split sec!!)

May grab this: ASRock H77M LGA 1155 Intel H77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Not necessarily. The speed increase you'll notice is very minor compared to what you'll get by upgrading your GPU, maybe adding an SSD in the mix.

Already got a couple SSDs in there (Samsung 830, old Intel X-25m), but I may start looking at new video cards. Thanks for the heads up, didnt think the graphics card mattered much!

Or an even better thing to do would be to buy a Xeon CPU instead of the Core i7.

This way you pay less for the same performance.
