Random Freezes on ASRock Extreme4 Z68 with Windows 7 64 bit

Hardware:

  • ■ ASRock Z68 Extreme4 (not gen3, updated bios)
    ■ Intel Core i5 2500K (model BX80623I52500K)
    ■ G.SKILL 8GB DDR3-1600 kit (model F3-12800CL8D-8GBXM)
    ■ WD3200AAKX 320GB 7200 RPM

The computer has been freezing, seemingly randomly for the past year. I have done memory tests, changed harddrives, performed all updates, re-installed Windows 7, and now I have begun to start tuning bios settings to hopefully fix the issue.

My question is, is there any form of recommended bios settings that should be stable. If so and the freezes could continue, does this mean my motherboard is shot?

Also: I read through this question here. I know the board is compatible with the memory and CPU. However, is this memory compatible with the memory, the Intel 2500K says its only compatible with DDR3-1333...

sorry for the late reply, there are few things you can try.

#1- run memtest to test for bad memory,

#2- Run PassMark to test your components,

#3- update your bios

#4- reset your cmos

#5- run y-cruncher and core temp to check if you are possibly overheating

note: you should really look into updating your bios, if you have already done it do it again this sounds like a bios thing it happened to me once as well... so yeah definitely get that updated.

I have already run memtest (overnight once), my bios is fully updated, and I have cleared the CMOS. I will try your other tests as soon as I can.

Since the freezes are rather intermittent its hard to tell if a setup is good or bad. Currently I havent had any crashes after I set the memory to run at the DDR3-1333 profile. Im crossing my fingers that that is my solution.

that may be the solution were they overclocked? they may be unstable, also i recommend you definetely stress test your memory as it is with 1333 and 1600(or whatever it was before) just to check if the clock speeds are causing it to be unstable. Unfortunetely i dont know of any programs that stress test it, well actually i think that y-cruncher if you raise the ram limit in the beginning to your max amount of ram it should put your ram to 100%

note: if it is your ram 1333mhz will almost show no difference in performance to 1600mhz or 1866mhz
