General Knowledge question about RAM usage

This isn't a problem so much as a curiosity.

I run conky on all my computers and have noticed that after startup is complete RAM usage is low (about 390mb in Ubuntu and about 200 in Xubuntu). However, later after doing a few things I find that at idle RAM usage is up quite a bit. What causes RAM usage to increase? Is RAM storing data from browser sessions and such?

Thanks for any answers.

As legokill101 said, it's completely normal behavior. Sometimes the OS doesn't release resources right away after killing a process and conky reads this as RAM being used. It's listed that way because the PC is reserving that RAM for when the application is opened again - it's part of how Linux does memory management. When you open a new program, the RAM that was reserved for the previous application(s) is released for use with the new program.
