Asus VG248QE - Help Identify Cause of Grey Lines

I recently purchased an ASUS VG248QE. After running normally for some time the screen will flicker grey lines and eventually the entire screen will look like static on an old television set. I can still bring up the menu of the monitor and read it perfectly fine so I am unsure if this a problem related to my graphics card or the monitor.

To get rid of the problem I have to reboot the computer. I've included a video link because quite frankly I don't think I'm describing it well enough. The problem is more likely to happen when I am watching a video (YT, or WMP) but has also happened just browsing websites

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1m4av17SYNk&feature=youtu.be

The graphics card I am using is a radeon hd 7950. Tempts do not go above 41c even under heavy load running at 144hz. I haven't had any trouble with this card on my previous 60hz monitor.

I used an ICC profile from pcmonitorreviews which said it may cause some problems with video games so initially I thought that was the problem. After disabling the ICC profile and restoring the monitor to default settings I still encountered the problem while browsing YT. So far I have been able to play video games for hours on end and will not encounter this problem, it only happens outside of that.

Is this a problem with the monitor or graphics card? I have plugged in my old 60hz monitor and do not seem to encounter this problem. I just received the monitor a few days ago so RMA'ing is still an option. All cables are to the best of my knowledge plugged in securely and correctly.

Are you using the Dual-link DVI-D cable that came with the monitor or the same cable you used with your 60Hz monitor? This is required in order to get the 144Hz refresh rate.

Make sure you're using the cable that came with the monitor.

If that doesn't work and everything works with your 60Hz monitor, RMA that sucker.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I am using the cable that came with the ASUS VG248QE. Ok, guess I will RMA. Are we sure its the monitor? I can play games for hours, its when I am watching videos that I get this problem.

No, I will definitely RMA this one and see if it happens with the next VG248QE I receive. I have no idea how monitors work so I was just confused why this would happen with videos but not video games. The 60hz monitor can browse videos and play games fine.

It seems like anything that uses WMP or Flash will eventually cause this effect, whether its within 10 sec or 20 minutes. Do I have to configure anything special for a 144hz monitor with these programs? It seems to be happening more frequently. I can still watch movies/videos/etc when I plug in the 60hz monitor.

If it doesn't happen with games...

Are you running with the latest AMD drivers for your video card?

If so, have you tried removing the drivers and installing a past version of the drivers to see if that fixes it?

I just tried downgrading AMD Catalyst from 13.4 to 13.1 and got the same effect after a few minutes of watching a YT video.

Hey thanks for the tip. I just gave this a try but I'm still getting the same problem. I've tried reinstalling flash but that didn't help either.

Doing an RMA so I will at least see if its the monitor or something else.

After doing the RMA, have you seen any better results? My monitor (same model) is doing the exact same thing and I'm running a GTX 770. I have tried all of the suggestions above as well as many others. Is this just a manufacture malfunction or is it simply an issue with driver compatability? I am also running it at 144Hz with the included Dual-Link DVI cable.

It has something to do with the monitor and the fact it is ASUS!...lol
Just kidding, although I'm not..lol
If it was working fine previously and started pooching out gradually then I would say the monitor ALL the way!
Plug in a regular screen and you should have no probs.
I don't know if the GPU providers have drivers optimized for 144hz...?
Might be a good question for their respective support channels.

Hey there!
I have the ASUS VG278HR and i too have those grey horizontal flickering lines, its a trade off unfortunately...
Would you like silky smooth gameplay or no grey lines?
My fix is to change the refresh rate down to 60Hz unfortunately... Although you can play on 100hz, the lines aren't as pronounced as they are on the 144Hz option, but I suppose you get the best of both worlds...
I hope this helped :) Have a good one!

my issue is identical to the posters original video.

I have no problem playing games or just browsing windows or the web but it seems that as soon as I watch a video the monitor crashes to a "static like" screen with horizontal lines.

my previous monitor was a 22" Samsung lcd and it never had this problem.

just wondering if I should also return it.

Hi there!

Okedoke, I very stupidly did not read the entire paragraph and did not notice the youtube video... <-- FAIL :p

I have now watched the video and that is nothing like what I have experienced. Try putting the refresh rate back down to 60Hz.

Just had a thought!
I remember months back I was watching a review of the Asus VG278H and I vaguely (I may be wrong) remember him saying that AMD cards (at the time of the video's recording) DO NOT support 144Hz, so try 120Hz or lower and tell me how that goes...
Good luck and have a good one!

So it seems it may be a issue with the framerate and video playback all together. I have found others who are having the same issues and it is all recent posting in the past few weeks. So im not sure if that has to do with the drivers that were recently released from amd, but it doesn't appear to be a issue directly related to the display.

this link is from a review on the vg248 and further down the page it talks about the "static" affect or "white noise" screen that occurs when trying to play back video at such a high frame rate as 144hz.

http://pcmonitors.info/reviews/asus-vg248qe

"When testing responsiveness on our movie titles we had to revert to a 120Hz refresh rate. At 144Hz we ran into exactly the same problem as in the BenQ XL2411T where the image appeared completely scrambled like white noise. This time we were using CyberLink PowerDVD 10 which is a slightly more recent version but the end result was the same as that shown in the video below."

anyway's so far this has only occurred when playing back video, and for whatever reason it has not happened today as I surfed through youtube videos. I did how ever dial down my gpu as I had it slightly overclocked on the core and memory side. (not sure if this has helped but no display crashes yet)

I still have about 10 days to return the monitor to the store for exchange without problems but I'm starting to feel like its not the display that's the issue as much anymore. Game play has been great and super smooth without any crashes to the static screen.
I also used the information in mentioned link to dial in the color calibration which helped quite a bit over the factory settings which were horrible.

Anyways fingers crossed for now but I'm still trying to get to the bottom of this just to be 100% confident.
