Phenom CPU unlocking

So I recently bought a Phenom II X2.
It was listed as a Phenom X2 B55 which does not exist but said it was unlockable to an X4.
I am pretty sure the person just didn't know what they had fully.

So if it is a phenom II x4 B55 when unlocked I should be getting a X2 555 right and it will have an unlocked multiplier because 555 is a BE CPU.

It was listed as a B55 @3.0Ghz though.
555's are 3.2 stock.

Weird right?
It will be arriving in a couple days so we will see what it really is then!

Now what I want to know is how much of a temp and performance increase will I see from unlocking the extra 2 cores.
Will the thermal paste and CPU cooler be good enough?

I got this paste,
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001IMFH4I

And this CPU cooler,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835999048

Now I have owned this cooler for a while and it keeps my Athlon II X2 245 Overclocked to 3.6Ghz with a 1.48Vcore at 60C under full load.

As for this new CPU I don't plan on overclocking anything heavy or changing the Vcore unless I have to for the other cores.

Will those do the job though?

Yes, I had a Phenom II X2 555 BE some years back. It unlocked to a very stable Phenom II X4 955 (B55). But as soon as you do that, you no longer have an 80W chip. It now becomes at least a 125W chip... at stock speed. I say at least, because it may have been downgraded due to heat problems. Then again it may have been crippled due to a bad core or two. But if you're lucky, you'll have a nice PhIIX4 955 w/unlocked multiplier when you are done. Or, at worse, a triple core. But most 555s were good chips with cores disabled simply for marketing reasons.

The cooler you show is adequate for the chip. Just keep an eye on the temps in case the dormant core(s) was disabled due to heat issues. If the temp becomes an issue, you may want...

Well that's good to know.
I am not happy to hear about it jumping up to 125W but my PSU and board should be able to take it.

Now I see you have a 212 Evo,
would you be able to measure the width of the top?
I was thinking of getting one but didn't know if it would fit in my case.

Ok so the Phenom II B55 unlocks to an Athlon X4 555.

So which temp on HWMonitor do I use for my CPU temp since I don't get those anymore?

Unfortunately, when you unlock cores, the core temp no longer reports. This is common with every Phenom II that has unlocked dormant cores. What you can do is reset the processor to a dual core, run HM, stress out the processor, and see which TMPIN is the CPU package. Then go back and unlock the cores. You can use the TMPIN that is the CPU package instead of cores. Just remember that the CPU temp will read a few degrees less than the actual core temp.

Yes, you should still be able to use C&Q. No issue there I'm aware of. Try AMD Overdrive to see if it records temps when cores are unlocked. I can't remember if that pgm was able to do that or not.

Btw, if you want to continue this conversation (which is fine), you should really start a new post or PM me so the mods can close this one since you already picked best answer.
