Did you guys see this? Just popped up on my feed.

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/382267/intel-haswell-hotter-and-slower-than-expected

Seems that the retail versions are running hotter and unable to overclock as well as the demo parts.

Well I have a 2600K and I know that 5.0 Ghz was never guaranteed, but with better cooling I always felt I could get close. I always feel I have headroom but 4.5 Ghz is more than enough for me. It runs 24/7 on a H100 mind you.

Is it possible that the Intel guys tried hiding how badly the new line overclocks and sent our pre binned/verified parts?

What about those first few reports which said that these chips are a breeze to OC?

If Intel did do this on purpose, its pretty disappointing. Just my two cents here.

Well, of course they sent out the highest ES's, it's intel...they hide everything they can, for as long as they can get away with it.

Haswell OC's very poorly based on all the site reviews and industry analysts feel intel was very misleading about the ES's sent out, as nothing in the regular product gets close to the OC's on the review samples.

word around forums and review sights seem to indicate intel once again used thermal paste between the IHS and the actual die (just like in Ivy bridge). now since Haswell has a higher TDP than Ivy, it comes as no surprise that it runs hotter, and the heat makes it OC worse.

I would be interested in seeing how much a proper deliding or watercooling an naked haswell die will increase OC headroom. but alas, I can't test such a system until late october, so in the meantime, hunt around the forums for people building such a setup

I built a 4770k build on Sunday and have a corsair H60 installed. I am not interested in overclocking until I need to though so I cant provide much insight. I'm coming from an i7 960 so this is a pretty good upgrade. Definitely noticeably faster overall but that's to be expected.

Well, I'm pretty sure AMD and nVidia are also in that "special OC-able ES to reviewers" bandwagon. It would be a very bad business practice if you let "luck" play a part in reviews. Anyway, it doesn't take away that it could be the same as the early Q6600 of its time. Give it some months for another revision.

Please tell me you OC'ed you 960 before going Haswell.

Cheers!

Well, atleast the other 2 culprits have QA well enough under control that the ES's don't outperform the regular product by a wide margin though. I am not saying anyone is innocent...but the results aren't wildly different like they were with hasfail.

Please tell me you OC'ed you 960 before going Haswell.

Cheers!

+1

I messed around with it a bit but nothing crazy. I'm not a big overclocker. Money wasn't an issue and I have had the upgrade itch for a long time. I almost pulled the trigger on SB-E a while ago but decided to wait.

Also my brother in law needs a PC. This gave me the easy excuse to upgrade and hand my older system down to him.

True. Maybe they watch their backs for a possible backslash and save the fine stash for later "special edition" parts. Like AMD's fine selection Pilediver CPU, hahaha.

That thing is nothing but aged wine with a bigger sticker price.

Ah, I see. Then more than being performance-starved, "the itch" came and took over of your sanity, haha. I can relate since I'm guilty of it as well.

Still, try playing with it IMO. Free performance is always free, right?

Cheers!

Yes, I can imagine that's exactly what it is...

Can you imagine if the ES's from the 8350 hit 5.5 GHz or something ridiculous, and then no one could get much better than 5.0 out of the regular product? AMD would have been boiled in oil over it! However, Intel pulls that sort of shenanigans and the public laugh it off as an after thought that they're getting swindled over a fair amount of "blue sky" in the potential performance!

Well, no one from the enthusiast camp, as far as I have seen, is laughing at the poor showing in OC from Haswell. Not to be the devil's advocate, but just make the distinction between "regular Joe" and "knowing Joe", haha.

Anyway, like I said, I think Intel is going to fix it; they can't afford to damage their image I guess... Well, they always can, since they have trucks loaded with gold parked in their campuses around the globe, haha, but still it would be very expensive for them. Also, they already did it with the G0 stepping for the Q6600, so we might see that happen again.

Cheers!

I have no impulse control at all. I need new stuff! I may OC the 960 a bit for my bro in law. Well see what types of games he wants to play and at what settings.
