I am doing my second build as we speak, err, type. I bought myself a i7-3770k and GA-Z77X-UD3H and I have mounted the CPU and am about to mount my CPU cooler, might do the RAM first idk yet. My question is software related.

My first build includes some parts that I will be using in the second build including the storage HDD and a SSD for the OS which is Windows 7 Ultimate.

I have a discreet GPU but do I have to start the new build any certain way or is there any BIOS type things I need to do first?

Should I just format the OS SSD and install a fresh copy of W7U? Thanks for any replies.

Regarding the GPU question, I mean is there a reason I need to start the new build without the GPU installed or can I change that in the BIOS settings. Also is there any BIOS update needed for this motherboard that anyone is aware of? It is a rev 1.1

I would treat it like a brand new build. If you're introducing new hardware, yes I would format the OS drive for the fresh install. However, make sure you deactivate and Adobe software, or Steam/Origin account. You do not have to deactivate your Windows install; it will 'call home' as soon as you are online and you just feed it the product key.

If you need a refresher on what to do, once you've installed the OS, you'll probably need to install the ethernet driver for the motherboard (probably via a cd that came with the motherboard) and start downloading drivers!

If I understand you correctly, you are planning moving the SSD (which alreadt has the OS installed on it) from one computer to this second build. If that is correct, then you should re-install the OS in the second build.

Regarding the GPU (again, if I understand you correctly), you can install the GPU in the new build. Just make sure the integrated Intel graphics is disabled in the BIOS before you install the OS.

You should check the mfg website to see if there is a newer BIOS revision available.

Thank you for the responses and yes you understood me correctly. Right now I am using a i3-2120 and B75 motherboard and am upgrading to quad core i7-3770k and Z77X-UD3H from Gigabyte Motherboard. I will be using the OS hard drive, a Sandisk Extreme 120gb SSD. I am also swapping in my GPU, a GTX 650 Ti Boost 2gb. I also replaced a Corsair CX430 with Corsair TX750. Staying with 8gb of 2x4gb 1600 mhz G. Skill Ripjaws X. Can I update the Motherboard BIOS after I install the OS or do I have to do that before I install for the first time? Will I be given the option to format my SSD on the new build, how does that go down exactly? The second build seems less straight forward than the first I wonder how that happened haha

I agree with drewhoo treat it as a new install. Be sure al your drives are listed in the Biosm and set your Graphics to boot up on PEG, save and exit. Boot of O/S disk and format the SSD and install your O/S. Then install the motherboard drivers off the motherboard CD. Reboot and do the windows updates, rebooting when needed. Then install your VGA drivers. Set restore points during and after your done. Good luck!

Thank you all for the assistance and thank you very much for the step-by-step instructions for what I am doing. This should be the last build I do for awhile and my second ever so I am no expert.

After I am up and running where can I look for the best settings such as cache? I am not very confident when it comes to certain settings but I can navigate Windows fairly well to change settings. By cache I mean when Windows says I can set aside a certain amount of space on a HD to function as cache memory or maybe RAM memory (see I don't know all too much.) I remember people mentioning how you can make the system run better with this setting over that setting so I am not sure as to what settings I should have to get the most out of this system, overclocking aside. Thanks again for all the help. Who needs Dell Customer service when I have TomsHardware.com and a home built rig? :)

The reason I am asking so many questions right now is because I am on the first rig right now haha and after I turn it off I have to be sure I can make the new one because I would hate to have to ask anything on my cell phone screen. At that point I will be well pissed off.
