2x2GB ram shows up as 2x1GB ram

I currently have 4GB (2x2GB) of DDR2 ram installed in my system however it only shows 2GB (2x1GB) is installed in bios and cpu-z.
Ram is clocked at 400mhz but because it is DDR2 I know its is actually performing at 800mhz (the speed it was sold at).
My motherboard is a gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 that is capable of running 16GB (4x4GB) of ram i have a AMD Phenom II X4 965.

I previously had this ram (Patriot memory PDC22G6400LLK) with another 2GB (2x1GB OCZ PNOCZ2N800SR2GK) but have now removed and I believe when it was mixed with this ram the motherboard only used 1GB on each 2GB card and now when they are on their own the are still using 1GB on each card not 2GB like it should be and totaling up to 4GB (2x2GB).

All help is appriciated,

Benjamin

Hi

You need to read the motherboard manual (or website) for supported ram types
and which 2 of 4 DIMM slots to use

Motherboard may only accept memory type available when chipset released
(or be board revision or BIOS version dependant)

number of memory chips on DIMM can be important
modern DIMMs have larger capacity memory chips but fewer of them which can cause problems in older models

look at crucial web site for guidance on suitable RAM specification

I have checked and my ram cards are in slots 1 and 2 and they are supported by my motherboard according to manual and crucial.
I am not sure how to test how many chips are in each stick of ram, could you advise me further on this?
I do not understand what you mean by hard reset and isn't BIOS flashing risky? By putting ram in slots 1-3 do you mean put both my ram cards in those 3 slots in all possible configurations?

Generally flashing a BIOS today is no big deal, just follow the directions from the manufacturer. A hard reset is, turning off the power, unplugging it, and resetting the CMOS via the jumper on your mobo, see your manual for instructions. On your mobo, if I remember right slots 1,2 from the CPU are Blue, 3-4 are white, would like to try in 1-3 to see if it may be a MC thing or a mobo hardware issue

OK thanks because yes on the label is said 2x2GB set so we assumed it was correct as that was written on the stick however it seems that someone took the label of another stick or something.
Thanks for looking into this.
I have now reinstalled all 4 gigs and am hopefully snapping up 2 pairs of 2GB ram:

I looked for these earliar in the week if it became apparant that we couldent fix the supposed "problem".

What do you think of them?

As long as they stay under £80 i'm gonna try and get them.

It doesn't really matter that i didn't get what ram they said it was as i got one set with a dual core, before upgrading to my quad core , cheap off ebay and the same with my current Mobo.

Yep this person selling them says he picked them out of his old pc because he got an upgrade.
If i get them the good thing will be that they are 2 matched ram cards that won't conflict.
