Want to Create WAN Sync System

I want to accomplish something very simple (in my eyes): I have a Synology NAS, and several Win 7 machines (I also have a mac, but ignore that for now).

I want to centralize some data on the NAS, and WAN sync it to the clients.

This should, in principle, be extremely easy. I have found it extremely frustrating.

Firstly, I'm not sure exactly what system/software I should be using.

The Synology NAS comes with a built in OS called DSM, which I find very limiting as well since it's not really just a flat unix server.

1. I set up the DDNS, and I can connect to the NAS via SFTP on WAN. Obviously the NAS works fine on LAN.

2. I have attempted to look at simple solutions, such as just using sync software (i.e. I tried something called Synkron), and targeting the NAS LAN folders... I then realized this won't work because I need the NAS to be mounted/mapped on WAN.

So I considered VPN (Hamachi), but this seems more complex than I would like, and I have no actual requirement to have a VPN continuously open.

3. I then looked into NetDrive, which maps WebDAV folders (like those on my NAS) to WinExplorer, which I was then going to use for Synkron or some similar file sync/replicator. But I couldn't get NetDrive to connect properly to the NAS.

4. I then looked into OwnCloud, which is a server/client system which apparently does more or less what I want in terms of sync (it gives you control over both sides of your own 'cloud' which is what I want).

But unfortunately, while someone wrote an OwnCloud App for Synology NAS, it seems very buggy, and I was unable to make it connect to my NAS properly. The Windows client seems to work ok, but also would not connect.

[Synology has its own proprietary WebDav host called CloudStation, which I believe supposedly does what OwnCloud does, but I also know it's rather restricted viz. settings, so I haven't tried it yet - I'm assuming it does work though]

5. At this point, I am very frustrated, and most people are just telling me to "use Dropbox" or something similar, which, aside from my dislike of storing my files in open cloud, is also not an option because I want to have my entire (several TBs) dataset available to me on WAN, and Sync-ed.

6. I'm currently looking into SyncBackPro (by 2 BrightSparks Software), which SEEMS to have FTP/SFTP WAn sync capabilities, but I'm a bit dubious as to why this seems to be one of few softs I've seen that does this?

Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks in advance.

Apparently there is a small cottage industry creating these WebDav/SFTP/S3 etc sync/mount applications (which I find shocking because the OS, i.e. Windows should almost certainly provide some of that functionality in working form natively (as do OSX and Linux).

I have tested GoodSync on my WebDav, and it works as I like - I might try SyncBackPro if I can be convinced its better/faster/etc.

I tried mounting WebDav folders on my Win7 machine but this failed repeatedly, I don't know why - I got the special update (why on earth does Win7 need a special update to connect to WebDav folders???), but it didn't seem to help...

So even with GoodSync - I still cannot mount a WebDav share folder to my OS, but since I wanted to just sync it, this should suffice for now.
