Hello,

I've put this question under "components" because I'm really not sure where my problem lies; so right to it...

Okay, I'm trying to record my Yamaha Digital Piano using a line in cable with my laptop. I plugged in the cable to either headphone ports (keyboard and laptop) and used Audacity to try and record the sound from the piano. Unfortunately no matter what I do, Audacity will not pick up the sound from the keyboard. I don't know if it's the laptop, the line in cable or the piano's fault but what exactly should I be doing? I really need to figure this out and see no other way to record it.

Thanks!

The headphone port is an output. You can't record through an output. You can use the mic input but is far from ideal, you'll have to turn the record volume very low to avoid a extreme overdrive and saturation. You can do it just for the registration of an ideal, if you are a composer or something, but to anything at least audible, get at least a entry quality audio interface like an m-audio or something.

You're supposed to connect the cable in a Red or Blue colored port (Microphone and Line In) in your laptop. I don't know about your piano but if there's any 'Line Out' port then connect the cable to that. Also if you have Realtek HD audio driver, check the recording volume, like SW Synth etc. make sure all the volume bars are up. I can't say much about this stuff because I'm using Windows 7. If you have Windows 7 then right click the volume icon in the task bar. Then go to Recording Devices and go to whichever port you have connected to and check the levels if that port is receiving sound or not. And then go to that port's properties, then go to Levels and pull up the volume bar there.

Oh okay. I have two ports on the laptop. One for headphones (which I was using) and another with a microphone icon beside it. Is this the one I should be plugging the line in cable?
