I installed linux on my external hard drive succesfully (I think). When I choose to boot with it at start up, windows on my sdd boots instead. The entire drive is partitioned to ext3. When I boot with the installation cd the partition program says that linux mint is indeed on the hard drive.

First is the External sdd install set up as a Live DVD (USB) boot or a real install. If it is a real install, go into bios and make sure the external drive is the first choice for booting, if it is, try powering down and than disconnecting the sdd than go back into bios to make sure it's not listed. If it still doesn't boot after all that it mighty not really be set up to boot from what amounts to a USB drive. I managed once to one set up a linux install to boot from a USB hard-drive, but it ran like a glacier.
