No, that's too high. I would say the highest temps you want to see are in the 70*c range. 80 and change might not kill it, but you should still shoot lower.

I think the stock fan profile on my reference board was never really aggressive enough. For tuning that card, I used ATi Tray Tools which can be gotten from Tech Powerup. You can set a temperature and corresponding fan speed for ten or so temps. You can setup a nice, sort of S shaped curve that's quiet at idle and then quickly ramps up around 55*C to whatever speed will hold it in the 60's and keep it there, so it's not pulsing fast and slow. Then you can set it to jump right to 100% when it gets into the mid 70's or so. Tray Tools let's you overclock, and set all 3D parameters too.

Now, your 4870 is OLD. It may very well be full of dust. Skip the canned stuff, and bring the card to your favorite auto shop. Ask them if they have a good air drier for their shop air, and when they say yes, ask them to blow the dust out for you. Or they might just hand you the air and let you do it your self.
