Hey I did some research experimenting and I think this is the only way possible
http://www.kanexlive.com/xd
I'm in the same boat and have the same setup I have a iMac late 2009 27" with a gaming Pc
This is a connector that allows you to use Hdmi inputs into the Mini display port, so you could use a hdmi cord from your PC to the mac and if you have DVI instead you can buy a dvi to hdmi cord and plug this baby into it and it will act as a second monitor for your pc also you could use it as a tv
unfortunately when apple developed mini display they only had their products in mind and if you buy any mini display cables they are only one way cables e.a from the Mini display port (Apple Product) to the other product (None Apple Product) thus needing an expensive adaptor, it is very unnecessary for them to do this but they like to keep all the money in the family.
Also This is way more inexpensive then buying another monitor and you can use your gaming consoles on the iMac thus creating a really cool command center of entrainment and not having to worry about the mini display port Debacle.
I will have my xbox one and my PC hooked up to the iMac through a HDMi switch and splitter this next month when I can afford this Piece.
I haven't tried it yet but will follow up on the product when I get it.
But I assure you that this is the only way possible.
I really hope this helps and if this answered your Question put as best answer so other people can find this thank you.

Hello there. I have a Late 2009 iMac with the mini displayport on the back. Currently, I am running a video card on my Windows desktop PC that has a minidisplay port. I currently use a mini displayport to mini displayport cable and it works/displays fine. However, I just upgraded the video card in the PC, and the new card does not have a mini displayport. The new card has HDMI, DVI, and a normal displayport. I found a displayport to minidisplay port cable - but I wasn't sure if that would work because most people using it stated that they were using the cable to connect to projectors or external monitors.
My question is - can I use this cable to display my PC on the iMac 2009 27 screen? And if not, are there any solutions that won't cost me more than $10 to $20?

Good grief. I agree with you and I came here figuring this is where I'd find my answer. I want to use my 2009/2010 Imac with a HP workstation. I tried Apple since I was given the iMac in 2010. Yes, it is a beautiful monitor, but I just can't get excited about the operating system. All my grown children and even my grandchildren and my wife love their iphones, iPads and MacBooks, but let an old fart be happy with Windows 7. So please tell me what you did ($10 and $20 is my price range too) because I have a feeling you figured it out. Thanks. Hope I am replying to the right person.
