Way to cap FPS without vsync?

Hi,

I'm wondering if there is a way to manually cap my fps without using vsync. The problem I have is that without vsync i get horrible tearing above 60 fps, and with vsync on my fps drops to 30 when i can't maintain 60 and looks horrible.

borderlands 2 had a feature that allowed you to cap the fps at several different values that was amazing because it avoided all the downsides of vsync. I had mine capped at 50 and never had any slowdown at all. That way i could avoid the tearing and the slowdown.

Is there a way to manually cap fps in all games or is it limited to what each game allows?

Your GPU will have a control panel, maybe you could check there first.

P.S. Higher Nvidia cards have adaptive V-sync that adjusts the V-sync levels

automatically to what provides the most smoothness. Just something to keep in

mind for your next upgrade.

I agree; adaptive vsync is a nice compromise b/w quality and fps.

Other than the GPU control panel, apparently there's a tool packaged with Rivatuner that allows you to set vsync options. Maybe that will work better for you.

i managed to get my fps capped at 50 for hitman absolution using msi on-screen display server (rivatuner) and it is working great. no tearing, and no fps drops when i can't keep 60 fps.

hopefully this will be made easier in the future. seems like an obvious problem to me.
