Did I make a mistake buying Ivy Bridge?

Just when I thought I did all my research, I hear about Haswell. Typical eh :(
I'd already bought a 3570k for £130, only £30 cheaper than the 4570, and a motherboard so can't really go back now but how big of a mistake is it? Is it WORTH upgrading when the cash is available or is the difference minimal?

The CPU and MOBO were from Ebay. I can't see me getting any return.
I guess i'll have to wait till a few months and save some cash!

Honestly, it isn't worth it. Ivy Bridge will last you for a long time, and Haswell seems like it won't overclock as well, I would just keep the mobo and 3570k.

little no upgrade? 1155 is dead, the 5th gen chips will be 1150...

Did you mean the 4670k? And no, if youre overclocking haswell is no better than ivy. The only advantage is an upgrade path on the lga 1150 socket, but i doubt broadwell will be worth the upgrade. Haswell is by no means worth the money over ivy. So enjoy! Honestly though, I was in you situation a few days ago (choosing between ivy and hAswell) and i went with the fx 8350. Its not a bad gaming cpu by any means, and it beats the ivy i7 (not sure about haswell) in rendering and the like.

And if you meant the locked 4570, definitely not, its worse than the 3570k

There will be a Haswell refresh on the 1150 socket, then Maxwell will get a new socket ANYWAY. The days of 775 socket being upgradable over 4 generations are gone. Every "TOCK" will have a new socket and the haswell refresh is bound to have very little performance increase, nothing that can not be surpassed by a mild OC.

yes i understand that, doesnt change that 5th gen chips will still work.

I don't really see much point in buying a Haswell board for the "upgrade path" as new sockets are being released so frequently that by the time you decide to upgrade your CPU socket 1150 is going to be considered dead end as well, just as 1155 and 1156 are. I would only plan on replacing my CPU if I bought something like a Pentium or an i3. But with an i5/i7 it is plenty fast compared to Haswell chips, especially if you OC. If you are buying a CPU/mobo today then yes get Haswell, but unless you have money to blow don't fret if you bought an IB, they will still be good for quite a while. Look at people with C2Q/i7 nehalems from pre 2009. They aren't top of the line but are still good enough to play modern games if paired with a good GPU.

My OC'd 2500k is just as good. There's only been about a 10% performance jump between each generation in the archetecture whereas CPU overclocking performance has decreased. Stick with what you ordered. Haswell isn't worth upgrading to unless your system is over 2 years old and not overclocked.

Maxwell? Maxwell is Nvidia's next architecture isn't it? Not really related to intel.

LOL Broadwell. My bad, too many damn wells...

IF the haswell refresh is NOT called Broadwell obviously.

I meant the generation after haswell. Why are intel names so confusing now D:

In real world usage, Ivy Bridge and Haswell are the exact same. Haswell is slightly better in benchs, but those are synthetic. If you already have Ivy Bridge, why buy a whole new Haswell CPU, if its almost the same thing? When the 3570k finally is either extremly slow compared to other CPU's on the market, or starts to bottleneck your system, THAT's when you upgrade.

To op:

If you're hardcore ocing (like with high end watercooling) than ivy is the exact same if not better than haswell. A reviewer stated that he couldnt oc the i7 4770k above 4.7 ghz even with a corsair h80. And the temps he got (mid eighties) are not good. Realistically, even with the best cooler in the market right now, I wouldnt recommend a oc above 4.7. And the majority of chips can only be overclocked to 4.5. Ivy can, with amazing cooling, go to about 4.9. That is enough to negate any advantages haswell has.

And if you're not ocing, haswell is a tiny bit faster, but its something you'll never notice.

I can not go above 4.7Ghz wiith an H80 either? LOL

So did you? But honestly what really deterred me from haswell was the price increase. Both the cpus and mobos are for haswell are 10-20% more expensive than ivy, and haswell is by no means worth that money.
