Almost all modern motherboards are flash-safe. A bad firmware update should not brick the entire system.

You have to be careful here. The system firmware is nothing more than a program which is stored in a byte addressable memory device. It's not some fancy chip which does fancy things.

Older motherboards use a BIOS firmware implementation and typically store it in an 8 megabit (1 megabyte) EEPROM. Newer mother boards use an EFI firmware implementation and typically store it in a 64 megabit (8 megabyte) Flash ROM.

There are some minor variations in each, so you must replace it with one that is compatible (but not necessarily identical).

The ROM chip itself will usually be seated in a chip carrier that looks like one of the following,

PLCC are the most common.

On laptops it is common for the manufacturer to solder the chip directly to the motherboard rather than allow it to be removed. This reduces the cost of the components and the total mass of the laptop. If the chip is not socketed, you're SOL unless you're extremely skilled with a heat gun and soldering iron.

Most BIOS chips these days are soldered to the boards. But Pinhedd is correct, there should be a way to revert to factory BIOS on most all modern boards. Since your product is a laptop, sometimes its as simple as putting the BIOS on a flash drive and holding down a key combination such as CTRL+HOME while powering on the system. You may need to read your manual for the correct instructions. Otherwise, you might have to just RMA it and have them fix it.

EDIT: I found this link to ASUS' laptop forum you may want to read.
