I'm a total blockhead when it comes to PC's, My daughter has a HP 530 it will not boot also other cosmetic problems, I ordered a used HP 530 w/o harddrive, can I place her harddrive from existing HP to the one I ordered and not loose her data? If so what would be the process? Thanks all.

Solution
Maybe. That depends on a number of factors.

Why won't the current system boot?
Is the motherboard and chipset exactly the same? Probably, but you never know.

Only way to know is to actually try it.

My suggestion would be to attach that drive as an external to whatever you're using now, and extract the critical data. That is the only real irreplaceable thing here.
Everything else can be replaced/reinstalled.

When the new PC arrives, put the HDD in, reinstall Windows fresh, and move on.

Bottom line - save the critical data. Everything else is secondary.

Before you replace the hard drive, just make sure you have a back up storage of your file saved somewhere else. Perhaps, you can utilize an external hard drive and just copy these files on the new hard drive once you have installed them.

If it wont boot they cant backup first, The answer is as long as the hard drive isnt the component causing boot failure the data should be easily retrievable. Does it light up in any way (just an LED on the power button or disc drive etc?) or whir or beep when you try to boot?

Take that hard drive out and install it as a secondary drive elsewhere.
Extract the critical data.
If that works, then you can proceed on...

What they said, if it operates fine as a secondary drive, then extract the data (because backups are always a good thing) then try putting it into the laptop. If its not readable on whichever pc you attach it to, then it gets more complicated.
