Hi everybody I am looking to build a machine for 3D rendering from cinema4D but I am debating going dual Xeon or 3930k. The reason I need help is price for speed. The dual Xeons I am looking at are the Intel Xeon E5-2450s' which cost 1,149 each. I am worried that the clock speed of 2.1 ghz is really low, basically too low. vs the 3.2ghz of the 3930k. The reason I picked these Xeons is budget, I can't go higher than that. what do you all think, is 2.1 enough if I have 16 cores vs 8? Will I see a significant difference in speed going with the Xeons and would it be future proof enough with that clock speed? Thanks for all your help and recommendations.

To the best of my knowledge:

The 3930K will meet your needs at $600. In terms of value, I would definitely choose it.

If you're looking for more rendering speed, the dual xeons will definitely be much faster. You're talking about 32 threads vs 12 threads, after all. If you think the additional speed is worth the cost, than that would be the right choice.

Side note: Don't overspend on a GPU as it will NOT help with rendering speeds. I wouldn't pick anything higher than a 7850. Put the money towards more/faster RAM.

The deciding factor will be if Cinema4D is well multi-threaded. A program that can take advantage of all 16 cores will greatly outperform the 8, even with the lower clock ratios. But it depends on how well threaded the program is. Otherwise, the clock rate of the 3930 will win. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the program, so i cannot tell you how well threaded it is. But if you can find out, this might help you figure it out

this is will be a home work station to make money on the side of my full-time job, probably about 20,000 extra a year.

Makes a lot of sense. I am leaning toward the 3930k just to save about $1,500 bucks, so thanks for the recommendation. I just wish I could compare then side by side and see how long each takes to render a frame.

Side NOte: I will be using After Effects also to finish my project and insert any HD footage. looking at the k4000 but not sure considering it is only 2gbs of ram plus I wouldn't mind playing a game or two like starcraft. Yes that is not why I am building this machine, but it would be nice to have a card that could be "pro-video" and a gaming card. C'est la vie
