So I'm taking a look at my dad's old computer(4-5 years) and I opened it up and right away I noticed there was no HDD. (This computer wouldn't have a ssd).
Was it even possible to run without a HDD???

If he had a disk with an image of an OS, it is possible. Right now, I have a disk that has Linux Mint 14 installed on it. Put it in a computer and set it up to boot from the disk, and you'll get Linux Mint 14, albeit a bit slower than usual. He could have also been using a bootable flash drive that he then removed

You can run always boot from another form of media, like a flash drive or a disc. Some forms of Linux can even boot on disc and then copy themselves to memory so they don't have to use the disc. So it is quite possible, although unusual

I'll check if there's a disk in the drive and ask him if he used a flash drive often
