Several files needed on a dropped external hard drive!

My brother dropped my external hard drive yesterday. Now, it could be recognized after I plunge it to my computer.
But, the computer always pops out a message and asks me to format it every time I want to access it in My Computer.
I desperately need the data that is still on it. What could I do? I only need several files that are made on Monday.
How could I get back these files?

If the drive out of warranty I would on a second data try to pull it and connect it to a desktop to rule out a damaged control board that inside those ext drives. Right now you can try from ccleaner a free data recovery program called recovia. Sp???

A good article on what goes wrong with Drives. In your case it's probably damage to the Heads and not easily recoverable, if at all. You could try Recuva as smorizio says, but I wouldn't hold your breath!
