screen goes blank and have to switch power off at the socket

i know absolutely nothing about computers :/ don't know what a GPU is.... gaming something ?
its an acer ...windows vista home premium..... it was a present in 2009, sadly giver passed away and i've never been able to sort it... i used it infrequently,it has always done this since new,,,,, then i didn't use it for a few years, now i'm on it regularly and it bugs the hell out of me ! ...... someone said it was probably a registry error? whatever that is ....sorry i'm so ignorant with comps its embarrassing! thanks for your reply.....
