Have Netgear combo DSL Modem/Router now. It' a N150 Wireless Modem Router DGN1000.

Works OK overall, but have some performance (wired & WiFi) and WiFi reception issues.

Have DSL service.

I'm wondering whether issues would be resolved or at least improved by connecting for example a ASUS RT-N66U (or other good router...) to the Netgear device.

1. Second Floor WiFi Reception

Have 2 story house. The Netgear device is located at one end of house on first floor. Good reception on first floor.

However, recently my wife started using new iPad and realized WiFi reception is not good in room on 2nd floor where iPad used.

So, got one of the little devices that you plug into electrical outlet. It's a Netgear WiFi Booster for Mobile devices, WN1000RP. It does work, but reception is not the best in room where iPad is used. Also, network is not as responsive always as it should be. Sometimes, pages either don't load or load part way and then stall. So, have to reload page again...

Device sets up another wifi network with '_EXT' at end of name.

2. First floor Network Performance

Similar issues to what I described above occur on first floor where I have a MacBook connected via ethernet cable to the Netgear device. This includes slow or no page loading in browser or email program can't retrieve emai. This doesn't happen all the time, just periodically, but often enough that I'm aware of it.

I'm thinking that the network performance issue is likely a DSL service issue or modem issue, would you agree or ?...

If so, what is good way to figure out what's causing issues and resolve them?

As for 2nd floor WiFi reception issue, would it help to add ASUS RT-N66U (or other good router) to network by connecting it via ethernet cable to my Netgear device?

From what I read N66U has very good range and performance. So, thought it might really provide much stronger signal upstairs and hopefully, eliminate need for booster unit there.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

34 Views and no replies....hmmm....

Well, actually, got one reply of sorts, an email today from the forums saying that someone had replied, which is very odd, since I don't see any replies....

Do I need to some more specific info or are my questions too elementary or ?.....

Thanks.

Try rebooting your modem/router.

Combo units are not the best, if one side fails, both need to be replaced and you can't upgrade as easily.

You can do a speed test on your connection to see if there is an issue, www.dslreports.com, in the tools link. If you get 25% or more under your rated speeds, contact the ISP for support.

For wifi connections, an extender would get you a better signal, more so than the power plug device. You could also look into powerline networking, the tech used in those has gone up in quality and speeds quite a bit and it actally usable now.

If by rebooting, that includes turning modem/router off and then back on again, then I've done that...each day....

Makes sense....thanks....

Have checked speeds before and they were OK, but can check them again...although my problems are not about speed, but range and intermittent lapse of reception....

Thanks for all your suggestions!
