I need to upgrade my memory--have 64 bit OS My diagnostics say I have 2 slots available. I have DIMM0 (2MB) and DIMM2 (2MB) according to diagnostics. How can I be sure about what type of RAM to buy?

HP Pavilion dv5 Notebook
Motherboard manufacturer: Quanta
Product: 3603
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU P8600 @2.4 ghz
Intel64 family 6 Model 23 Stepping 6
Data width: 6 bits
L2 Cache size: 3072 KB
Memory slots available: 2
Memory Chip: DIMM0

Memory Chip: DIMM2
RAM 2042 MB
I received this automated response from a website which didn't list my exact model: Pavilion dv5 1134TX
DDR2 PC2-6400, DDR2 (non-EEC) ; I'm in China and I'll probably translate whatever advice I get where that's doable. I'm just reluctant to go in cold buying sticks.
Appreciate your attention.

thanks. sounds like good advice. I have found a site called Laptop Inventory which provides replacement RAM but haven't worked out yet why they say replace existing RAM--at least that's what their wording sounds like.
Thanks for your time anyway.

Hola!!:hello:

The only way one can be sure about the what type of RAM is to either check the existing memory or the specification of the laptop model.

I do not recommend the above memory as the details you have provided does not suffice to suggest the right memory. There are many DV5 series laptops and the memory specifications are different with some models and same with the other. One of the most interesting thing is that the recent laptops support DDR3 (notable HP Pavilion dv5-2139la) memory while the older models support DDR2 (eg. DV5-1235DX), so without confirming the exact model and recommending the memory is kinda premature I think.:spamafote: If you could let me know your HP product number (should something like this - RQ756AU#ABA. You can find it beneath the laptop or under the battery compartment. It is not the Microsoft product key.) then I can confirm if the memory is compatible. Looking forward to your reply. :vip:

:welcome:

Your HP part number confirms that your exact system model is HP Pavilion dv5-1134tx. It supports PC2-6400 DDR2 memory. The memory recommended in the above(Amazon) link is compatible with your laptop. However, I noticed that it is a 4GB kit ( 2 x 2GB ). If you need 4GB modules then you can try any of the following website - (click on them)
Crucial.com
Memorystock.com

Good luck!! :sourire:
