Hello everyone, I've recently upgraded my existing computer for the first time and specs are as followed:

CPUs: i5 655k (want to upgrade!)
RAM: 8gb
GPUs: gtx770
MOBO: ASUS P7P55-LX
OS: win 7

is 'Intel Core i7-3770 3.4Ghz' good for an upgrade plus feasible on my motherboard? Also, can i still use existing CPU cooler which i presume it's 'Asetek 510lc 120mm water cooler'? Lastly, is installing CPU same as popping in RAM and good to go? Suggestion would be appreciated thanks!

You cannot run any 2nd, 3rd, or 4th gen Core processors on your current motherboard. The 3770 is good, but if you use this mostly for everyday use and gaming, nothing more than an i5 is needed. Haswel was just released. If you're near a Microcenter, you can get a good deal on an i5 with any Z87 motherboard.

Your current motherboard socket is LGA 1156 and the i7-3770 is a LGA 1155 socket so a new motherboard is required with the upgrade. Your current cpu cooler may work if you have all the adaptor clamps that came with it or can get them.

Installing a cpu is much more than poping in ram sticks, it is a delicate procedure that requires careful placement of the CPU into the socket.

The Lynnfield i7-870 quad core CPU is an upgrade to the dual core that you have and would work in that motherboard if you could find one , but they have been discontinued so chances are slim that you could find one.

You might not need an i7 processor and could do with an i5 unless you have a need for the higher model. What do you use the computer for ?
What do you have for a budget for your upgrade ?

i figured i need to upgrade motherboards as well. i might as well just buy bundle deal mobo+cpu combo and keep it in mind to consider i5 over i7 since my priority usage is casual gaming. any recommendation on motherboard below $100? Can't seem to point out the best one since newegg's reviews are undermined by lots of defect reviews..

You can look at reviews to a certain extent but the man thing to do is to dive into the specs of the motherboards to be considered and see which ones fit your needs now and in the near future.

If you look at boards below $100 then your looking at less capable boards with fewer features, I know that when on a tight budget you have no choice so you really have to shop for sales and rebates and combos. Newegg has some good combo deals , if you don't want to overclock then you can get this combo.

Right now Intel beats AMD in single thread performance but AMD FX-6300 and up can still reach 60+ FPS on a lot of games and overclocking will take that further. Like I said, for future proofing for gaming I would go with AMD. They're also blending GPU and CPU memory pools to read off each other instead of having their own pools which will lead to efficiency and seamless play. AMD also has a lot of contracts with many game developers now not just because of their deals with Xbox and PS which will further lead to optimization. If your dead set on spending that much money on Intel then you have a lot of capitol to back that decision up and/or haven't done any kind of research.

While a good 970 8+2 power phase AM3+ motherboard will work for thr piledriver and the upcoming steamroller CPU. If your budget is tight buy the FX 6350 or if you can, the 8350.

I have an AMD machine that has an fx-8320 which I easily overclocked with a £15 cooler to 4.5 ghz (temps peak at 55 C when stress testing). I have a 7870LE graphics card (remember people that most of the graphics and your fps is determined by the graphics). 8gb of 1866 ram. And an SSD. My motherboard, CPU and cooler cost roughly 100£ cheaper than if I had gone for the i5. I can run any game full settings at 1080p. Okay so if I had an intel my synthetics would be higher and the power consumption a bit lower but seriously... I really recommend an AMD build especially as PS4 and X-box one will both have 8 core amd cores. FUTURE PROOFED or what!!! :)
