Drive Speeds in Raid 1

I have had a number of failed Seagate 1TB HDDs in a Raid 1 array (5 to be exact, over a 3 year period!) Fortunately, with Raid 1, NO data lost! With this last failed Seagate however, I bought new WD Black 1TB drives and plan to replace them.

The old Seagate Drives are 5400 RPM and the new WD drives are 7200 RPM.

I would like to replace the failed Seagate in the array with one of the new WD drives and let it rebuild the array. Then I will remove the other Seagate drive (the one that hasn't failed yet - this year at least) and put in the other new WD drive, rebuild, and I have a new Raid 1 with new matching WD Black drives. All the drives are 1TB, only speeds are different.

Will this work????

Update: When I pulled the failed Seagate drive, I saw that it was also 7200 RPM! I inserted the first WD drive and the rebuild is 30% complete. As soon as it is finished, I will remove the Seagate drive that is still working and replace it with the WD Black drive. I don't anticipate any problems.

The Seagate Barracuda drives have had many problems, documented widely and I will be happy to get them out of my system, even though they still have a few months of warranty left.

Still, for future reference, can anyone tell me for certain if you can operate Raid 1 with 2 different speed drives?

Solution

Yes you can. It is of course not the most optimal way to set up the array, but it will work fine.
