Today I did something very dumb. I tried to update the bios on my newly build machine (my first build ever) and... screwed it up in a major way. Ok, so long story short I went to the ASRock website and downloaded the windows bios update tool they have (for my specific mobo) and ran it. The result? After The popup about closing all programs it immediately rebooted and I was greeted with blank screen (there was no input).

It wasn't until after I made such a wonderful move that I realized the website didn't say the tool was compatible with Windows 8, but just xp and vista. No idea if that's the overall cause of the failure or not, but I'm sure it didn't help.

I have tried resetting the CMOS and no dice, so I'm stuck with a computer that will power on, but wont POST or do much of anything at all other than run some fans and flash some LED lights on my RAM.

Is there anything I can do to recover from this, or am I going to have to send it in for repair (or god forbid having to buy a new board)?

Also, I have contacted ASRock support, so I'm waiting for them to get back to me on this.

Solution
If the system not dead dead..you can some times force a bios flash recovery. Some mb and bios with the mb cd in the drive or a on a USB stick holding down- a set of keys can sometime force a bios reflash. My self as a tech these mb vendors need to cover a CMOS chip replacement when it there own program that bricks a mb.

Thanks for the link and response. I have been frantically searching the net for any kind of info and replacing the chip was one thing I found (but I didnt know if I could even do that with my board lol). I'm seriously kicking myself in the butt for acting before thinking and not being more careful with this.

Right now I'm pretty much accepting that I might have to shell out some cash to get this fixed, and that's ok since it was my own dumb fault lol

Normally I wouldn't even attempt to update the bios, but I was having some issues with my computer freezing and crashing when playing Mass Effect 3. I thought it was a overheating issue at first, but I realized it wasn't that, especially since I had not overclocked my i5-3570k. Guess I was better off with the freezing/crashing and should have been happy lol

Hmm... I didnt see any hint of being able to do that with my board, but I think I'll give it a shot tomorrow with a usb stick. But as far as ASRock covering the chip cost... I clearly screwed it up by not paying attention and reading the system requirements properly, so I have no problem with eating any possible cost of repairing it. Course, maybe I'll get lucky and since I purchased it just last month they will send me one free of charge *crosses his fingers*

Thank you thank you thank you! Today I took your advice (somewhat) in that I downloaded the flash version of the bios from ASRock and put it on a usb stick, then stuck it in my computer and turned it on. Right away I noticed something different than before... it actually restarted a few moments later and did that a few more times before I got a screen saying it was recovering the bios (and updating it).

I'm using my new PC to write this right now and things seem to be going ok so far. Also, I didn't have to press any keys or anything when I started it up with the stick connected, it was all automated.

Now I'm going to be interested in seeing what ASRock's response is to my support request I put in the other day. If they tell me I need a new bios chip then I know who I wont be asking for help again =P

Yea, I'm damn glad my dumb mistake didn't end up costing me money and it only made me determined to be more careful in the future.

Thanks for help (both of you). I so was not looking forward to going back to my low powered laptop (low end 1.6GHz single core acer *shudders*) lol

Yea, trying to do it from windows was a bad idea, and was just me being lazy and careless.
