Hi there...

I am setting up a Domain Controller for a start up company and do not have any infrastructure in place. They have chosen to go for two servers, one being the main server where as the other one is used for redundancy, if the main server should fail.

I was wondering if implementing a RAID 5 Solution would be optimal between the two servers, and how many disks are recommended.

I was thinking of putting 2 1tb sata drives in each server!

Please advise

You will need a minimum for 3 disks to create a raid 5 but I suggest a minimum of 5 with 1 hot spare.

I'm not sure what you mean by "between the two servers" when you talk about the raid. Do you mean a Nas or something more enterprise oriented?

I know that --under linux at least, you can run run a non-degraded software RAID5 with just 2 1TB disks using mdadm. You will only get 1TB of usable storage space, performance will be slightly lower than a single SATA disk because of the added latency of syncing multiple disks. I do suggest going with at least 3 disks but 2 will suffice. With RAID5 you can always expand later.
::HOWEVER::
This is not your data, not your servers, and you are liable when one of the disks fail, and your parity information is trashed making data recovery extremely difficult. If you dont want to end up in a court battle, add more disks. Also be sure you implement some sort of backup system for them where data is stored in at least 2 locations.
