I'm currently preparing my pc for a custom water loop and ran into this issue. I need a little extra space inside the case and want to remove the disk drive rack. I installed a SSD and cloned previous HDD with no issues. However, when I unplug the HDD I get a boot error message after the BIOS runs. The boot priority is set for the SSD and the HDD is technically not being used. I can't figure out why I can't merely remove it at this point.

With the HD in the computer, check the OS partition on the SSD is both; Active, and the default OS in the bootloader. You may want to use a boot manager for easy bootloader edition.
