I recently started using my old Dell Inspiron n5010 since having hardware/firmware problems with a newer build.

I found that startup was incredibly slow (BIOS started fine, OS, not so fine) and sometimes would require several boots to get to the login screen. After this, I used speccy to check the temps and found that my cores were running at an average of 80'C-90'C with only 20% CPU load. I would also like to note that I have the CPU overclocked @ 2.22 GHz (rated for 1.73 GHz)

I have tried to remove the underside of the notebook to try and clear out any dust in the heatsink/fan (which is probably the main cause of the heat) however after removing all visible screws on and in the casing, I was unable to remove the bottom. Is there a way to remove the dust without removing the casing, also, is there a way to limit my cpu clockrate which would also help heat management.

laptops dont just "come apart" like that (exception some Sony units)

first up DISABLE the overclock this is a laptop with an already hot mobility chip that has its own self managed overclocking ("turbo boost") control, also Windows power management set it to balanced so it can over/underclock the chip correctly, DONT use high performance profile

compressed air is what you need to remove the dust buildup, that or carefully open the unit up properly (see youtube clips on how to) - its not just the base tho, if your inexperienced DONT open the unit

also check/update your video card drivers - if there bad or not power saving correctly it will leak heat causing eveything (cpu chipset etc) to report high temps (usually the cooler is one large linked cooler for everything - one hot chip = all running hot etc), if you have overclocked or tampered with the gpu clocks reset them

there seems to be a problem with turbo boost, i can't get it to run so it's not overclocking, also i have put on balanced and it only slowed it to 2.13 GHz

background apps loading the cpu? whats the average cpu load after ~2 minutes sitting at the desktop

also what tool are you using to check the temprature?

if the chip is running hot it will cap the turbo boost frequency to suit - i believe your seeing that cap

theres no physical damage to the laptop? has it been dropped?

can you hear the fan spinning, and air flowing out the side?

The laptop had been dropped but there was no damage apart from a small crack on the corner of the casing, the fan is working (it's pretty loud) I am using speccy to look at temps, also the load on boot is around 10-20%
