Backup Windows XP.

Hi everybody,

I have a compaq presario laptop which came pre installed with Windows XP home edition.There was no windows xp disc came with it.I want to backup only the windows xp os(all os files) because i am going to install windows 7 which i brought some months back and see if some type of problem is encountered.If there is a problem running win 7 then i need my Legal copy if windows xp back.
please do not suggest me to use the recovery disc creator as i tried it and it always fails to create disc because of some type of error and it also backups bloatware given by hp.Thanks in advance!

First of all, I think it won't work because many of the registry entries, etc also need to be put in. Copying windows is not as easy as copying movies.

Still if you want to, open C drive and copy "Windows", "Program Files", "Program Data", "Users". That is all in windows if I am right.

in case i copy the folders you said,then how do i restore all things when i will be running win 7

Paste those in another formatted drive and format windows 7 drive fully. I don't know this method would work or not, and I guess no as there is no way to actually backup an installed OS itself.

But 1 thing for sure, you are not going to need windows XP once you try out windows 7. It is one of the most successful and convenient windows to use with lots of useful features.

but windows 7 will give a hard time for my laptops intel celeron!
btw,can i use a pirated versions xp disc and type my laptops legit key when it asks for key while installing and use legit os??

Well that is the thing which works.
It is the "key" for which you pay, not the OS. The original one you would buy, and the pirated one you would download, its all same OS, no difference. The difference is that if you crack the OS so it won't ask for key, it becomes pirated windows but if you enter the real key, it would be genuine windows.

In fact these days people buy windows from stores and keys online. And do the same.

its all same OS, no difference.

You hope. It's possible the torrent downloaded has a virus or rootkit in it. You might want to consider borrowing a disk from a friend who has a known good one. You can get your current key with magicjellybean.

Whenever I download a torrent, I make sure to check its seeds and download the most seeded one. Then I check the comments to make sure its 100% safe.

So far I have downloaded many many torrents but not a single virus in any.

Usually the ones with all that stuff do not gather enough seeds to be considered good enough.
