Upgraded from GTX 285 to GTX 660ti and now have screen flickering... help!

I'm hoping someone can help me here, I'm at a loss...

I've recently decided to start upgrading my old system bit at a time. The first thing to go was my old GTX285. After much deliberation I decided on the GTX 660ti. Ordered the Palit version, installed, and all appeared well until I fired up some games, at which point I noticed a flickering on the screen at all times. It's particularly noticeable on darker backgrounds, but is constantly present when games are running. It did not happen on the same games with my older card.

I googled and googled, but signs pointed to a defective card so I purchased another, but this time an EVGA GTX 660ti. Just installed, and the problem is the same.

I've uninstalled/reinstalled drivers, checked about every forum I can find, but have no idea where I'm going wrong. I know my Mobo supports PCIe2 but was told that the 660ti is backwards compatible. I currently have to 660ti cards which can't both be defective, and I don't know what to do... please help!

If it helps, the games in question are Battlefield 3, XCom Enemy Unknown, Company of Heroes 2, Borderlands 2...

hey there,

well you really got a weird problem in here. as far as I see you have tried all the things already.

but

I may suggest increasing the frequency of the monitor. probably you are running 60Hz. already.
if its really/actually flickering (flickering is about frequency of different power sources / different chipsets and different electromagnetic field.) there are couple things you may try. I dont know if it will solve but it may worth trying.

1. increase frequency of your monitor. (probably 75Hz or higher, i believe your monitor can support it indirectly eventhough its not the monitors natural refresh rate)

2. replace your power supply with a better one (since you upgraded to a newer gpu, the power or the power output you use for the new gpu may not be enough)
(this is my strongest suggestion btw)

3. try another monitor

4. try using the monitor in a different place (change the room, there may be an electromagnetic field where you use the computer)

5. try SLI maybe ? get a better psu for sure :)

Hi thanks- I just tried altering the refresh rate, when I test at 75 I get an 'out of range' message so don't think that's an option.

I did consider the PSU. My present one is 700w though, I did some rough working out and didn't think I'd need more than this- does 700w sound enough in your opinion?

well yea power wise it seems enough. but what I'm trying to say is "maybe" the capacitors are worn out and it doesnt provide enough power on the power-port you use for graphics.

Well, what a d*ck I am. Only just realised I was using a VGA cable with a DVI-D adaptor. Replaced with a £8 HDMI to DVI-D cable and problem solved. Never even realised the cable had an adaptor. Not bad now i've spend £90 on a new PSU and an amount I don't want to even disclose on a top notch motherboard bundle. Oh well, at least I'm up to date I guess. Cheers for your help n1ght4v3n, just so happens you were trying to help a complete retard. Appreciate it none-the-less.

Honestly man, if you don't know the solution then why give bogus advice? I have never come across a person having a screen flickering problem because of the PSU. The guy just wasted his money on it... Next time let the experts handle it. I'm glad you solved your problem OP

plus
I never told him to go and purchase a psu. he could always borrow from a friend or to purchase and return it in time (customer policies). makes some sense with your "ideas" next time.

Man your post up there is the very definition of fail. Asking a guy to try a SLI configuration just because his monitor was flickering? You can't even make up for something as stupid as that. I know my electronics and i'd rather keep my mouth shut then give out bad advice like you did up there and i suggest you do the same. Also i never gave out any ideas but as soon as i saw this post i felt sorry that OP had to spend money on a 850w PSU. A GTX650ti system can consume a maximum of 500w total and the guy was running a 850w your bad advice made him get a 850w PSU for nothing
