Hi,

I'm in the market for a used laptop and wanted to know what lowest end GPU('s) are available that can decode HD and play through HDMI.

I am looking for a laptop for ~$200 but am looking solely for GPU specs for HDMI and HD playback.

I found some of these (ordered best to worst according to notebookcheck):

ATI MOBILITY RADEON X2600
NVIDIA GeForce 310M+Intel GMA HD
NVIDIA GeForce Go 9200M GS Dedicated Graphics Processor
Intel GMA HD integrated graphics
Intel GMA 4500MHD

None of these seem able to play HD smoothly and with audio in sync (according to user feedback in forums). Please let me know if you have experience with HD playback on a laptop and maybe could recommend a GPU. Thanks for your time.

Any laptop with a 2nd generation Sandy Bridge (Intel HD 3000) or 3rd generation Ivy Bridge (Intel HD 4000) Core i3/i5/i7 CPU will be able to handle HD video via HDMI. In the AMD camp, any of the Trinity or recently released Richland APUs should be able to handle it.

I'll need to go home to absolutely confirm that my Lenovo IdeaPad Y470 can play back 1080p video using just the Intel HD 3000 which means I need to temporarily disable the nVidia GT 550m. You'll have to wait several hours though.

But... I would just get a laptop with the Intel HD 4000 since those laptops are generally on sale to get rid of the remaining stock since new laptops based on Intel's recently announce 4th gen Haswell Core i5/i7 CPUs have just started to hit the market.

Here are two examples of $400 laptops with the Intel HD 4000 graphics core:

Here's a $400 laptop with AMD's Trinity APU.

I prefer one of the two Intel HD 4000 laptops (Acer, Lenovo) because Intel CPUs are more powerful than AMD's APU in terms of processing power at the same clockspeed. That means the it will last you longer before it starts to fell slow. The AMD laptop I linked to has a much lower clockspeed than the Intel laptops which means it will start to fell slower sooner than the Intel laptops.

The A8-4555m is a quad core CPU, but it is a slow quad core compared to Intel's fast and powerful dual core CPUs.

Lastly, the following Acer is the cheapest laptop with the older Intel HD 3000 graphics core. Since it costs $446, there's no real point in spending $46 more for older tech.
