I have a HANNSG HG216D monitor and an NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT graphics card. Whenever I use a HMDI to DVI cable, I receive a loud hissing and crackling noise from the monitor. I then turn everything off as the noise sounds quite threatening.

Can you explain why? If it a fault with the monitor?

I've tried this, it's still happening. The VGA to VGA cable is fine...

I don't smell burning scents, however I don't leave the cable in long enough after hearing the sound in fear of damaging the hardware.
The monitor does have speakers.
I have an extension cable which my computer, speakers, external hard drive, and monitor is plugged into. So yes.

As an added note, I tried to hook my second monitor up to the DVI slot on my gpu via DVI-DVI, and it wouldn't work. I contacted NVIDIA and after a month of searching we found out that it was because whoever manufactured the card didn't include the correct table for DVI, so the DVI port was outputting VGA.

My current setup is where my main monitor (Monitor in question) is connected to the VGA port via VGA to VGA and my second monitor is hooked up to the DVI port using a VGA to VGA cable with a VGA to DVI adapter.

The reason I'm concerned about my monitor is because soon I'll be upgrading my computer, and the gpu will only have 2 DVI ports and a HDMI port... This isn't ideal if my monitor's HDMI port is faulty...
