Hi again.

I haven't done any server building yet, so I did a little research into it. We're using a tower server that's running out of space and has no spare drive bays left to add on.

This is the kind of business that stores all files and some program installation exe on the server and would lose the entire business if the server failed. RAID 1 minimum. I think RAID 10 would work best for this use. (4 hdd min). Could I use 2 "volumes" in RAID 1 with 3 hdd per RAID 0?

On the current server, we're running too low on RAM, so I'll try to get information on how much it has right now.

If we buy, then we get a warranty with one manufacturer, but if we build, then there are an assortment of benefits such as easier and cheaper repair and upgrades, etc.

Overall, would it be better to buy a server from a major manufacturer or to custom build a server?

This is a small CPA firm, there's not going to be a network admin sitting around here. There was someone that set up the first network sometime in 2002-2004 and upgraded once more, but he made some poor decisions that might have helped 10 years earlier. I've recently been doing custom builds for the office to replace some dell vostro PCs that started to fail early.

This is critical information, but sometimes it's hard to tell what kind of upgrades you can make to a purchased server. I'd need to add more ram and storage to a purchased server, but I wouldn't know whether it had more drive bays.
