Upgrade Graphics Card or other parts?

Hey guys,

Recently i've been considering upgrading my Sapphire 5770 Vapor X to a Sapphire 7870.

However reading some answers on various questions some say my current CPU will bottleneck the 7870, however i am unsure as to what extent.

I'm currently running AMD Athlon II X4 640 at 3.00Ghz on a ASRock N68C-S UCC.

Any ideas on if this will bottleneck the 7870 and if so how much?

If so is it worth upgrading my CPU in order to handle the card or just by upgrading the card will i get a significant improvement from the 5770?

I will be playing games such as Battlefield 3/4, Crysis 3, Far Cry, and Skyrim. My 5770 runs these games well but i'm looking for a boost in performance to run them on higher settings.

Thanks,
Simon

I also have an X4 640, and I can tell you that it will bottleneck a 7870, but not by a massive deal.
However, I think you should consider upgrading your CPU anyway, as am I.

As your motherboard only supports AM2+ and AM3 CPUs, you don't have a lot of room to upgrade. You could upgrade to a Phenom, but your motherboard only supports up to 95W CPUs, of which most are only marginally better than an X4 640, which would be a useless upgrade.

Therefore, I'd recommend getting an AM3+ motherboard and an AMD FX series CPU - this would be a fitting upgrade for you.

Of course, budget permitting.

I'm upgrading to an FX-8350 and a HD 7850 soon, unless I decide to wait for the HD 8xxx series.

Do you recommend a specific motherboard and what should i be looking for in one? Considering you said it will bottleneck but not be a massive deal do you think i will still get better performance than my 5770?

Yes, you'll still get better performance than a 5770, but you won't embrace it's full potential with a 640.

And you want to be looking for a motherboard that supports AM3+ CPUs at 140W, such as the ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3 (MicroATX) or ASUS M5A78L/USB3 (ATX).
