Upgrading my Graphics Card (AMD A10 5700, Radeon HD 7870)

Ok so I have had my PC for a while and the integrated graphics of the A10 5700 has been pretty good in the applications I used it for. Now I wish to actually use a discrete graphics card on my system. Any good recommendations?

So far I've been thinking about this card, the Powercolor PCS+ Radeon HD 7870 Myst. Edition http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131484

It's supposedly almost as good as a 7950 due to the Tahiti architecture. Ofcourse since I'm upgrading the Graphics card, I will also need to get a new Power Supply as this 300W one can't run anything more than a HD 6670.

This Seasonic 620W one has been my go-to one : http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151095

All though, some one has recommended to me this Corsair 650W one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005

I plan on using the graphics card with my CPU which will probably bottleneck because of the lack of the l3 cache but I'm willing to live with it until I can get enough money to get a new Motherboard, a new processor hopefully a Core i7 as I want to render videos out really fast, and maybe a new Operating System CD because of the motherboard change? I also plan on using dual monitors in the future. I game in 1080p.

Here is the computer I bought so you guys can have an idea of the specs. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883220217

Any issues with the PCI-e Slot compatibility or whatever?

Anyways, give me some tips, tell me if my plan will work out or not. I have no specified budget really, I just don't think paying like $400 will be much of a benefit for me. After I get the new Motherboard, I may Crossfire my Graphics card with another one, I read that you can crossfire the Tahiti 7870 with a 7950 or 7970, I hope this is true. Anyways, thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  1. I have the 7870 myst edition card and its wonderful, i dont think there will be any PCI-e slot problems , if its 2.0 x16.

    And you are right, the cpu will be bottlenecking you, even my fx-6100 is bottlenecking on some games ( yes i know crap BD architechture ) but i got that processor for like 70$ so meh, anyways... The problem might be the card's lenght, its 10.5 inch : 26.6cm, so make sure that your case has enough room.

    and yes, you can crossfire it with 7870xt/7950/7970.

    I also think that your plan will work, i have done the same, started with AMD athlon II 2x +3800 / HD3850 ---> 5850 / AMD Athlon II 3x 455 ---> fx-6100 / 7870xt

    Thanks for the reply! Any heating issues or noise issues I need to worry about?

    well the card runs little bit on the "hotter" side ( 70-80c ) on load.

    and the fan is a little bit noisy, im using a custom profile and @ 75c the fan runs about 60-70% so yeah..Also remember that my 7870 myst has core OC'd to 1200 from 925.

    If you have heaphones like me, you wont notice the fan that much.

    If you are a gamer ( like me ) 9/10 times the GPU doesnt have to run @ 75-99% to maintain a nice 60 fps.
