Hi all. New guy here. Thought I'd try my hand at building my first PC instead of buying one like I have always done. It will be a gaming PC

I don't have any interest in OC'ing, so I was wondering what some knowledgeable people would recommend for a MB.

I will be using:

CPU: i5 4670

MB: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming LGA 1150 Intel Z87 This is the board I was looking at? Also these two

GIGABYTE Z87X-UD3H LGA 1150 Intel Z87 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

ASUS Z87-PLUS LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

GPU: 7970 or GTX 770

Memory: CORSAIR Vengeance LP 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

Storage: Western Digital WD Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM

SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD128BW 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Case: Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl

Power Supply: SeaSonic X Series X650 Gold ((SS-650KM Active PFC F3)) 650W ATX12V V2.3/EPS 12V V2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Optical: ASUS 24X DVD Burner

OS: Windows 7 or 8 not sure yet?

Thanks for the help

That looks like it'll be an amazing machine. You're pretty spot on with most of the components, I would go with the Gigabyte mobo, it'll have a slightly faster CPU to RAM transfer rate. Definitely go with Win7, unless you are willing to wait for 9, Win8 is good for productivity, but when it comes to gaming it really sucks.
your choice of CPU is also good, an alternate route to go would be to look at an AMD machine. Their performance is less than Intel, but they make up for it with brute force. they give you way more GHz and cores for your money, which you pay significantly less of as well. That is just a suggestion though, you should have a look at AMD's products before you make a choice. Just to let you know, the AMD fx 8350 only just tops the i5 3570k so the processor you chose would be the better option unless you want to save same cash.

It is really a solid build.
1. If u don't want to oc then u can go with Asus z87-A, C, K. They are cheaper than plus version. U can save some cash.
2. For best performance go with Gigabyte gtx 770. It is best GPU in this range. Sure it is faster that 7970. No chance no get 7970.
3. Windows 7 is much better than Windows8 for gaming. Ur other parts are perfect. Just build it. It will be rock.
I hope it helps.
Thank you.

Windows 8 sucks at gaming? I disagree.

Really? What makes you say that? Have you tried Win7 and Win8 for gaming?

Hi. I'm in a similar situation to OP, buying an i5 4670 since I have little interest in OC. I'm having a hard time choosing between H87/Z87, so I'm curious: why are you going with Z87 on this non-OC system? Could you please point out the relevant specs?

edit one more question: if I wanted to do some basic OCing, would Asus Z87-A be a good choice?

The only thing that stands out is that the Z87 allows for dual GPUs so if you want to upgrade your system later on or if you need more graphics power then it makes doing so a whole lot easier, but otherwise I would go for the H87.

You want a MoBo with an H87 chipset. I would not advise dual GPUs unless you are getting them out of the gate. Think about it this way: You're going to spend $100 for a more expensive MoBo and PSU in order to buy a 770 two years later when the price comes down to $300 so you can pair it with a GPU that has 2 years of use on it? Overall cost is probably $400 that could instead land you a GTX 970, which I imagine will perform similarly to two 770s, without the risk of a card failure more than 2 years out.

Also, don't bother with 16GB of RAM on a gaming build. You won't even be able to utilize all of an 8GB setup.

Yups I agree. If u don't want oc and duel gpus then u can go with h87 chipset and this mobo is one of best mobo. U can choose it.
Thank you.

yes the Z87 has a pretty good OC processor so it's safer and easier than using H87 to overclock. Basicly what you're looking for is the letter in front of the model number, if it is Z then its good for overclocking if H then it will overclock but it'll be more difficult and it won't do it as efficiently it does have extra safety features though, like anti-theft.
Like I said before the brand you choose doesn't really matter but I've always used gigabyte, it's just my brand, so you can go with ASUS, but I haven't had any experience with anything but gigabyte. I tried a Foxconn mobo a while ago and it was awesome but I haven't used one recently so I'm not sure how their latest models are.
