So I've been planning my build as I save money for it and Im going to be pulling the trigger and buying parts in a few weeks. Im building a rig from the ground up I need the OS, peripherals, and the monitor. I've been looking at monitors the past few nights and this one has struck my fancy, I dont really want to spend more than around 270 on a monitor but I would like a quality display in the 24-27 inch range with good color reproduction and a fast response time/refresh rate.

Any recommendations? Would this Asus be a good choice?

The only thing that I noticed when I switched to a TFT from a CRT is, downgraded color production, you won't face any problems with a 60hz refresh rate monitor. I didn't notice any significant difference when playing BF3 on a 120hz monitor(I played on a 60hz monitor but got ~48fps due to low end card). There was a
GTX590(not mine) plugged into the system so I'm guessing frame rates were around 120fps.
Get a LED monitor since the color production of these are the greatest among other type of displays(I like AMOLED the best but I think they aren't available on a computer monitor).

Get a monitor with the highest contrast ratio you can afford. You can easily get a monitor with a ratio like 1000000:1 in about $200. Also like I said before...

That is a great choice but when it comes to displays you should always view their color production. Sure the monitor has very impressive specs but specs only half the story here. Different monitors of same specs can display a same pic in differently.
For example I've found my Viewsonic to be the best(at least for me) if compared to the Samsung and and ACER displays that I own, this surely doesn't mean that I'll like all the Viewsonic displays. It's just that I find the Samsung and the ACER displays to be too blue(meaning that the blue hue is more)

I've been doing some research and I hear that the color reproduction isn't as good on the High refresh rate monitors, does it really make a noticeable difference in gaming? I'm used to gaming on CRTs so I'm assuming I would notice a difference..So I guess it comes down to refresh rate sacrificing image quality or going for image quality and sacrificing refresh rate.

I always heard that they are the smoothest and most CRT like, I do play a lot of FPSs so I don't know if it would make that much of a difference? What kind of monitor would you recommend for gaming that doesn't break the bank? I'm not trying to spend over 250 or so, and 23 inches+ preferrably

If you want anything better, then you have to go for a 2560x1440 monitor, they cost more than $600 but the monitors are very pleasing to look at. Hopefully the prices of those monitors will drop in the future.

People don't realize it, but the Asus 144hz monitor when calibrated carefully has actually pretty decent colors.......good enough where most people would not know the difference. Where it excels though is incredible contrast and much higher MOTION resolution vs 60hz monitors. Ill take superior contrast and motion resolution with average calibrated colors over excellent colors with average contrast and average motion resolution any day of the week. Games or not.
