Hi. My problem is that games like GTA 4 and crysis 3 lag even on medium settings. I wanted to know if I can overclock my cpu and/or gpu for better performance.

My config:
Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit
Acer 17' TFT running at 1440 x 900
Gigabyte G41M combo motherboard
XFX ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB GDDR5 with Artic Accelero custom cooling [ should i overclock ? how ? ]
2GB DDR3 RAM
Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 2.2GHZ with stock cooling [should i overclock ? how ? ]
180GB internal HDD which I dont use much since I have total 4TB of externals.
VIP 500w gold edition PSU. [ it has worked flawlessly for 5 yrs ]

I have been using this configuration for the last 5 yrs i think.Only the graphic card is 3 year old. RAM is a month old. I have never overclocked or tweaked any of the components.

My problem is that games like GTA 4 and crysis 3 lag even on medium settings.
Will buying extra 2GB RAM make games run smoother or should i think about overclocking ?
Pls help me out. :)

Its not what you want to hear but overclocking will only get you so much. That build is getting dated i would say just get a better gpu, but i dont know how far i would take that before a better cpu. Overclocking the gpu would probably yield moderate results. I would download msi afterburner and just bump up the core very little if even bothering. As for adding 2 more gigs of memory it would help but i dont know how much without adding more resources in other areas,

honestly the whole lot needs replacing if you want even decent quality at your resolution. i did an upgrade for a mate with an e8400 which is alot better than your cpu and was oc'ed 8gb ddr3 ram slapped a 7870 in it and the cpu slowed the gpu down in bf3 you really need a quad core or a newer gen i3 as a minimum cpu and something like a 7870 is a nice step up in gpu. 5yrs is a good run, time to put it out to pasture!
ps when you do an upgrade get rid of that psu too, get a decent one something from 5 yrs ago will probably struggle with the amps required for a higher end gpu

I know like i said not what you want to hear im sorry:( . But hey a new pc is always fun. As for youtube dont believe them for all you know they lying about the hardware, settings, resolution, or best yet forgot to mention its liquid cooled and overclocked to the gills. If your running any of the graphics mods on gta it becomes a system buster pretty quick.

That system really isn't qualified to run high res smoothly for those games. You barely meet the minimum requirements (so, complete low settings) for Crysis 3, and are literally generations behind for running it at max. Mid graphics will lag you, even if you overclock that system.

For now, adding ram will help- immensely! Win 7 base ram needs 2gb - to run those games anything less than 8g is nuts. 16 is way better. Yes you have a dated system, no you cant currently run maxed vid. But get the additional ram and trust me - cheap fix compared to whole new rig. Throwing money at a problem is not always possible. And to say nothing else will help but whole new system... no where near the truth

Get the ram. 8gb total at least. 16 preferred

EDIT: forgot g41 has 2x ddr3 and 2x ddr2. Cant use at same time. So 1.5v ddr3 1333 2x4gb is your max for 8gb. Still, a cheap fix to get quite a bit more out of what you have. By the way, suggesting any OC of cpu or gpu on a 5yr old psu is asking for trouble

Because not everyone has a budget overflow or mommy's money to beg off of. Especially in today's economy, more and more people need to eek out what they can at as low of a cost as they can. Sadly, it seems those with deep pockets would rather offer derision than help to those without.

Eh, I'd rather save, look for sales, etc than sink money into something that is just going to get worse at an exponential rate, yeah it sucks having to wait, but the end result of saving and getting something truly worthwhile is often far more rewarding (and cost effective) than throwing dollars at something that is truly a lost cause.

Ignoring a $70 fix to buy a year or so (time to save while still using a pc for what you want) to just tell someone go spend 600+ you might not have or just don't use the pc for what you want til you have money...
Seem pretty callous and obtuse to me. Somehow I highly doubt any of you saying just buy new, if you didnt have means to, wouldnt jump at a chance to play a favorite game just a bit long for a few bucks

Yes do you know 2GB of RAM would set you back in excess of $20!? If you just throw your current system in the bin and put that towards a new one you will have a nice $600 budget rig in no time!
