I'm looking for the cheapest video card, NVIDIA and AMD that will support 2560×1440 at 60fps with graphics set to average, not ultra. Rest of the system is latest and greatest, so focus only on the video card with this question.

Background: Ideally I want to skip this generation of video cards but I need something to support a new monitor without completely choking or I would use my current card. Once the next gen cards come out then I'll buy latest and greatest.

To check try the link below. At the top you can change the comparision of cards to what card you are thinking of buying. Then for a large number of games at different Reolutions it will give expected FPS.

I choose a 7770 vs a 7850 and the highest resolution shown was 1920 x 1200.
However if I change the 7770 -> 7870, then Resolution jumps up to 2560 x 1600 - Resolution at 2560 x 1440, FPS would be higher.

I'm not a gamer but this tends to indicate the cheapest would be a 7850, or = Nvidia, card.

I have both the 7770 (i5-750) and a 7850 (i5-2500K OC = 4.2) connected to a single 2560 x 1440 PLS display. Have run furmark on both, but don't remember the FPS other than the 7770 was low - @ work so can't do a quick check, redo when I get home.

I caught you plan on skipping his generation of cards, But mention as food for thought.
The 7850 is approx $200 (probably as low as out want to go unless you lower the output resolution), However keep in mind that with a higher end card (ie 79xx) you an always move this card to new system - beats paying for two seperate cards.

I have been gaming at 2560x1440 for a few years now. Until recently when i decided I had the cash for a titan I gamed on a Radeon 5850 and everything was fine at average settings. So I would assume that a 7950 would probably be sufficient to run all games at around 60 fps. It not really noticeable if you drop to 50 or even 40 fps in some scenes too.
