I have the following set up:

MoBo - Asus P8Z77-V
Memory - Corsair (2x4GB) 1600MHz CL9 Vengeance
CPU - i3-3220 3.30Ghz
Graphics - Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 7850 OC Windforce 2X 2048MB GDDR5
Power - OCZ 700W
SSD - Samsung 830 128GB
HDD - Seagate Barracuda 2TB
No sound card.

The rig runs fine until I start to play games such as XCOM and Borderlands-2 in 1920x1080. The games will run for 5-20 mins and then I get a black screen or a screen with horizontal bands and a constant buzzing.

I have run 3DMark and the card handles all the tests without any crash.

I have run GPU-Z and the readings of the card look OK at the point of the crash (e.g. temp 50C, Fan 40%, memory used around 30%, GPU clock 975MHz, GPU load 50%).

Because the rig is stable I am guessing the GPU is the issue.

I have upgraded the GPU Bios and drivers to the latest release and the Motherboard BIOS.

Any ideas on how to either (a) definitively demonstrate the card is the issue or (b) try to fix the problem?

do you have a crossfire bridge installed between the cards?
Try each card separately see if you get the crash. If the cards work fine separately it could be a bad bridge. Could be your psu not handling the load. could be the fact that crossfire causes more issues than its worth most of the time (i've been there done that, never again!)

I guess I could try a CPU load test and see if I get the same result. But wouldn't the 3dMark tests also put load on the CPU alongside the GPU?

Can anyone suggest a CPU load test I could try? Prime95 maybe?

I've also now run FurMark which had the GPU at 100%, temp max was 61C with fans at 50%. No issues.

So where do I look next. The crashes only ever occur in-game.

I've tried all kinds of stuff now to no avail. I've run more stress tests on the GPU and it remains stable. I've also run stress tests on the CPU which is also OK. Next step will be to put in my old AMD HD 4xxx card and see if the system is any better in games.
