CPU is reaching extremely high temps. I fix it but the problem resurfaces every 2 months.

Specs:

CPU: FX-8350 (Stock Cooler)
MOBO: GIGABYTE 990FXA-UD3

I've reseated the heatsink and applied arctic silver 5 at least twice now, the problem subsides for a while and then resurfaces what is going on?

It gets so hot that it auto shutdown while gaming.

Factory or Overclocked?

Are you applying the TIM properly? Not too much, not too little... a pea-sized amount in the center

If you install CPU-Z or CoreTemp they will tell you alot about your system

I'm looking at 70+ degrees, I don't know at what point it shutsdown automatically, but it hits that temp.

And that is under load correct? Stock coolers are just good enough and those chips do run hot. Maybe time for a new, more efficient heatsink like the CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO. You can start playing with clocks and voltages then too.

Yeah but I'd expect the stock cooler to at least not let the CPU hit the point where it shuts down. And I just ordered that cooler

It may be your case's cooling. Some stock cases just don't cut it as there are some with only one fan included. I try for 120mm intake and two 120mm exhausts at the very least.
