MSI FM2-A85XMA-E35 motherboard doesn't let me use Richland APU

Hi all,

I just purchased an AMD A10-6800k to use in an MSI FM2-A85XMA-E35 motherboard. I set everything up and when I that the board doesn't support Richland (current BIOS is 1.7) and that there is a BIOS update available (v 2.0) which enables Richland support. The problem, I have no way to update the BIOS. It wants me to use a Trinity APU to do the update. As this is a new build and I'm not just upgrading the APU I don't have a Trinity APU. I tried their website but the BIOS update comes as a EXE which m-Flash can't read. I've also tried Live Update but it just hangs during boot.

I started a ticket with MSI but their website is garbage. I got a reply and when I try to go see it it says page under construction. Wonderful.

Does anyone have any idea how I may be able to update this BIOS to get my system working? I really don't want to have to buy a cheap Trinity APU just to update the BIOS. CPUs are notoriously difficult to return.

Any help would be immensely appreciated.

You are right, it seems MSI wasn't very smart in their implementation of this update. Either buy a low end Trinity and update the bios and then return the APU or return the board and go with Biostar or anther manufacturer.

It won't let me flash the BIOS with the Richland in place. It wants me to downgrade to Trinity in order to flash the BIOS. I was hoping for some kind of work around that would let me flash it with the Richland.

That's what I ended up doing. I ordered an A4-5300 for $50. Hopefully they let me return it hassle free.

I have the same M/B with the 5800k now running on it, and don't intend to put the 6800k on it. But to your problem. You need first to download the v2.0 bios unpack it, then load it on a usb stick ,FAT32, boot your computer, go into the bios and check that the usb is the first boot (disconnect hard drive and cd or disable them, if you like) then reboot let the software do the rest, BUT note this, MSI say that once you have done this you can not go back to the 1.7 bios or earlier bios, why?. Mine is working with this updated bios. This is a new board from MSI ver; 1.3 and, as normal they have stuffed up, as did others like Asrock @ Asus @ Gigabyte, at first release of there FM2 m/b's, but fixed it with a bios update. The problem is, the max; video ram will be 768mb, most other FM2 M/B's will say 2+gb, this is a problem with the bios, and MSI will have to fix this with another updated bios, and add that selection, in the gpu section, I hope they do it soon. I would say that this is a good cheap board, with some good quality build, but the worst version of the user friendly unefi bios, but you can get use to it, Asrock and Asus seem to be more user friendly. I would recommend the use of the 5800k on it, and 1899 ram . But as for the 6800k cpu I would wait until about September for the 88X chipset as this would be more suitable for the 6800k cpu. also note thiat the 5800k runs ok at 4.3mhz ( you must use a good heat sink and fan, try one from a 1100t, or 965 cpu copper base type, from Foxcom this will solve your heat problems at those speeds ) and the video will run at 844mhz with no problems, so why choose a 6800k ? look close at the spec's, and what about the 6700k?, But don't let that stop you, happy building.

The problem I ran into is that the BIOS update available on MSI's site is an EXE which the BIOS doesn't recognize as a BIOS update. I assume it wants me to run it from Windows, but since this a new build I don't have any OS on it. But even if I did it still wouldn't work because it doesn't let me get past the BIOS with the Richland installed.

So I just got an email (finally) from MSI support. According to them it is impossible to flash the BIOS with the Richland in place. They say I can RMA the board back to them and they'll flash it for me. However, I would have to pay shipping both ways and there would be a 6-8 week turnaround time. I won't be doing that. Hopefully the Trinity APU I ordered will do the job.

I most likely won't be buying MSI again.

I'm having this exact problem with a new build also~ Do you mind sending that Trinity APU my way when you are done with that flash? This situation is ridiculous.:(

to solve this problem, you have to downgrade the bios to v1.5 with M-Flash, then you can install windows on the system, and upgrade to v2.1 in the windows...... the v1.7 bios makes msi look stupid, and they should provide the ROM version for v2.1 which can be upgrade with M-Flash
