FX6300 = £93 ($145)
Phenom II X4 965 = £68 ($106)

Is the FX6300 worth the extra £25 ($39) over the 965?

The graphics card I already have is the MSI 7790, and after much deliberation I have decided to buy the Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 for £80. I do plan to overclock, but only further in the future when I actually need the extra performance to run games smoothly.

I watch HD videos, browse the web and play games for 4-5 hours a week. I understand 8 core cpu's are better, I just don't need that level of performance.

Thanks.

The 965 offers better performance/price ratio for gaming than the FX6300, but then the FX is easier to OC due to lower power consumption. Tought choice, but I'd take the 965 BE, spend saved cash on a cooler to OC it, since the 970a-ud3 you picked is already a great choice for OC-ing. Pushing the 965BE to around 4.0ghz and its gaming performance would be on par with a FX8320, in trade for higher power consumption, but since you won't sit around your PC much, a little higher electric bill shouldn't bother you.

The cooler I have is the gelid tranquillo rev 2. It's done a great job on my Q6600. Had I not been getting graphical problems recently then I wouldn't bother upgrading. Changed GPU and had a fresh windows 7 installation so I have concluded my motherboard is faltering.

I had not considered power consumption. My PC is on quite often, its just I spend much more time browsing the web and watching videos than I do gaming so less power consumption would be welcome. I have just noticed the FX-6350 runs at 125W. So perhaps I would be better off with the FX-6300.

That changed the outcome. The cooler you already have is a good one. Better get the FX6300 and OC it with that Gelid cooler then.

Thanks for your input everybody. FX-6300 it is.

I think I will pair it with 8gb of DDR3 1600Mhz CL9 Vengeance Low Profile Black Performance at £53. The Gelid cooler is huge so perhaps the regular sized Vengeance ram won't fit.
