If I get a USB3 expansion card and connect it to a PCS-e slot on the mobo would I then be able to connect the wires from the USB2 sockets on the front of the case to a header socket on the expansion card ? Would it work at all ? At USB3 speeds ?

No you can't. USB3 header is different from USB2 header.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Perhaps there is a USB3 socket plate that can fit in the redundant floppy slot on the front of the PC. I'm sure most cases are different so this is probably hard to find in a size that fits.

Another possibility to enable front connection would be a USB3 external hub to extend the rear sockets to the front. I've not seen one but I'm sure they must exist.
